5 point range

Hello Everyone,

I'm taking a class on Large format photography at the moment an have been trying to work on a accurate means of light metering. Briefly there was some discussion of a 5 point range and then metering in shadows to reach a 6 point range. Sadly this is the only information handed out, I was wondering if anyone could further explain this process. It has to do with the grade paper used in the darkroom. Also, if anyone wants to add in some incidental/reflective metering techniques that are useful, it would be much obliged.

Points is an odd word here. Try searching for stops and/or range.

Search for Ansel and Zone system also.

Phil Davis "Beyond the Zone System" is good grounding for thinking in terms of exposure range. This seems to me a nice alternative to the Zone System, and a bit less OCD way to think about exposure. Often also called "BTZS".

Welcome ewernotme,

Here's hoping you enjoy your class. For large format and alternative process, you will be experimenting. I recommend that you find something black, something white and something in the middle gray. Put this in all your photographs, near the edge of the picture so it's out of the way and you can cut it out of the finished picture later.

Then no matter what else happens in your experiments, no matter what your teacher tells you or what you read about here about exposure and development and printing, you'll have some idea of something that should be black and white in the finished print.
