Just to clarify: I do load the sheets emulsion in. While the uneven areas only consist of the AH layer, I'd rather not do as Rick does, so most of the way through fixing I move the bands a little to eliminate marks.
I rinse the hair bands well afterward and I haven't had any issues from contamination.
I take it that the developer is able to get under the non emulsion side where the band is against it or is it simply that the non emulsion side is deprived of developer where the band is but this doesn't matter? If the developer is able to do this why does the band need to be moved at the fixing stage?
The developer doesn't need to get to the base side, just the prewash and the fixer, mostly, and the cloth hair bands allow that permeation. A bit of a mark can remain on the base side where the bands contact the film, so moving the bands during fixing helps to eliminate this and any irregularities in elimination of the AH layer.
What little 5x4 I do I do taco-style.
With Foma 200 I found I would occasionally get a corner of the emulsion rubbed, but more careful agitation sorted that out.
I've used both thick and thin scrunchies, and thick seem better.
You have to be careful not to buy ones which are joined with crimped metal.
I do see slight rub marks on the reverse side, but I can't see any problems with the images when I contact print - however, I am usually making salt or cyanotypes by contact with this size negative, so perhaps it would be noticeable if I were sticking them in an enlarger.
rather like a Paterson v. SS Tank thread, it's clear that some people successfully use taco-style development while others are deadly proponents of trays ... in the end, it doesn't matter a hoot so long as you are getting the negatives you want ... except to folk who believe only the way they do things is the "correct" way, of course
Hi,
I have been shooting some 4x5 (Ilford 125) on my Ilford pinhole and want to develop my own film. But I only have a 35mm tank.
Has anyone successfully developed 4x5 in a 35mm tank? I did see a video of a guy doing what he called 'The Taco Method' but am a bit nervous about trying it.
