I'm looking for a lens hood for a Nikkor 5cm f2 LTM lens which I believe is 40.5mm fine thread pitch. On the bay there a many 40.5mm but as they don't specify I fear they are .75 thread pitch - the current standard. Any thoughts on a lens hood for this lens? I see some clamp on hoods there but they tend to get expensive for one in decent condition.

40.5mm/0.5mm is available off the shelf from Heliopan:
as collapsible rubber, as short aluminium, as telescopic aluminium

There is no other 40.5mm thread anyway.

I had that Nikkor 50/2 and it took the same 40.5mm accessories as my other LTM and Contax stuff, including more than one eBay filter. I would expect the hoods you're looking at to work.

I have bought a couple of inexpensive, metal, vented, 40.5mm hoods on ebay. FWIW, they fit my Canon and Jupiter LTM lenses just fine. I felt the finish was fine.

Thanks for the info! I was mixed up with the Nikkor 5cm f1.4 LTM (43mm) where there are fine pitch threads and issues with current filters.

As an alternative, you could also get an S42 hood from Canon. It is a clamp on hood so the thread pitch will not matter. I don't have that Nikon lens so I cannot guarantee it will fit.

Yes, for the 43mm there are two pitches. (A old high pitch and a current fine pitch.)

Not for the 40.5mm. As far as I know...

And the 40.5 filter fits - aside from a little roughness in the lens threads. So 40.5 is all the same pitch threads. Thanks for the help!

As I mentioned threads a little stiff - maybe very slight damage to the threads on the lens. Both the B and W filter and the lens are I believe brass. Is there anything I can use as a lube to help smooth it out? A micro touch of clock oil? Or wax?

I haven't gotten too scientific about it, but with the inexpensive anodized alumin(i)um step-up rings and such, I scrape a few tiny bits of wax off the end of a birthday cake candle into the threads at intervals around the circumference. I then screw it in and out a few times and wipe off any visible remnants. I suspect very tiny dots of a carnauba wax auto polish might be a candidate also. I would fear anything toward the oily side would migrate to undesirable places.

Have a look/touch at the male threads. Sometimes their ridges are not smooth cut. Going around such thread with a fine nail sanding-blade will smoothen those ridges. That might help. Though typically those ridges do not touch the grooves other than at the very start.
