I made an OM 4 grip which I 3D printed, I based it off the original, and it fits pretty well. I made this after seeing a post on a facebook group about how much these go for. I was fortunate enough to have two of these so I modeled a copy. I still need more practice with 3D design and with better programs to get better curves. I made this using a combination of flat bed scanning the part, tracing it in photoshop as a vector, and then building it tinkercad with digital calipers to get the exact dimensions.

It has the same vertical cutout for a section of camera leather for grip, but I may remove that to make a cleaner model and print with less supports. I also need to round out the top section. It currently uses supports, on for that section, the other for the screw hole. The model should be able to print without any supports though but I haven't tested it. It uses a small 3mm screw.

Well done. Though such part is still simple enough to be made from wood by milling at a drill-stand or even by hand, unless an actual copy is needed.
Of course there now are people who start with a 3-D printer and not having a classic workshop at the respective hands.

Hello all,

Just wanted to let APUG/Photorio know first that the grip is finished and uploaded to thingiverse and free for all to use, its under a creative commons, non commercial share alike copyright.

If you have a OM-4, OM4-T, OM-3, OM-3T, or OM-2SP and have always wanted one of these, print it out and give it a try! Enjoy!

That sharing of printing files of course is an advantage of that 3-D printing.

Yea the sharing concept is great, others can also contribute to the designs and make the better or different.I have added two additional style grips one with a vertical rib texture and one with a spiral texture to the files available. These can also be bought on shapeways (even in exotic printing metals) for those who dont have a 3D printer, or you can also take the files to a local library if they offer it by you, it takes about an hour to print.

I have a carbon fiber printed model that I am currently using and have put the original away. So far is holding up well, i had to use a metal screw instead of the nylon screw as there was some flex when pulled. The grip is now very solid when pulled just like the original.

At a more generic 3-D printing thread here I repeatedly asked whether there is a listing of photography rtelated files, but got no reply at all.

Aggregator sites like yeggi can help search for specific files that have been published on line, free and paid. Thingiverse, myminifactory, and cults3d offer tons of free files to print out cameras, many pinhole designs from 35mm - large format and a ton of 120 formats in between. Its a nice to have a 3d printer to make these small bits and not rely too much on donor bodies for parts or scouring ebay. Lens boards become super cheap and easy to make, lens hoods, lens caps, etc. Hopefully as 3d printing becomes more mainstream and designing becomes easier (especially 3d scanning) there will be more and more of such files available to all.
