Go look at holgaroids, hipstamatics and lomography: entirely shot on the cheapest lenses on the planet and you can see lotsa artistic "ThreeDeeNess".

What some people call "3D effect" is smooth bokeh plus subtle and smooth focus transitions, the way I think about it. And it's certainly not true that every lens can deliver that.
