I'm asking this on behalf of a friend; he has hard time in making digital negatives (method = PDN) for Pt/Pd printing using Epson 3800 and Pictorico OHP. It seems that the printer settings he's currently using arent enough to provide enough DR for Pt/Pt printing -> he wasn't able to get paper white with the CDRP printed at the SPT.

I don't own that printer and know nothing about its driver page/settings therefore I can't guide him myself. Can you please provide me *all the driver settings (and relevant information)* you use for making digital negatives w/3800, a la "for dummies" so that I can simply pass this information to him?

Thanks much in advance,
Loris.

Loris,

I am using QTR now with the 3800 and don't remember the exact settings using the Epson driver. However, chances are your friend is not doing anything wrong. The issue is that the colors of PDN do not give a lot of UV blocking density, about the max you can get is less than log 2.00, which is too low for straight palladium printing. The only way to up the density is to use a +INK setting. He could also try printing in Black Ink or Advanced Black & White. Both give UV blocking just a bit over log 2.05.

The bottom line is that if your friend wants to print in tpure palladium with no restrainer your he/she should consider using QTR and getting a palladium profile from Ron Reeder's site.

I second what Sandy is saying...use QTR with Ron's profile. Have him read everything Ron's written on his site re digi-negs, QTR, 3800, etc and he will be able to modify the profile and achieve a great print.

Thanks much Sandy & Paul, I'll pass that information to him...

Regards,
Loris.

Loris,

Before you steer your friend in the QTR direction ask him or her to make some prints of the CDRP with +5, 10, & 15% increase in ink deposition throught Epson print driver and print those at the standard printing time. It could make a difference.

I think he tried the +5% road already, and I'm not sure if +15% will be enough, since the negative he showed me was the thinnest negative (in terms of color saturation and density) I have ever seen...

Thanks,
Loris.
