35mm Motion Picture film in Still Cameras - ECN-II Processing at Cinelab, a reality

So, over on APUG was a discussion that migrated to the topic of using motion picture film in still cameras, mainly for the tungsten options. (there was a url link here which no longer exists) "Short ends" can be bought cheaply and rolled onto bulk 35mm cannisters

Using MP film opens up a huge arsenal of awesome films from both Kodak & Fuji, notably the venerable 500T (high-speed, tungsten balanced), in addition to the only option for 50 speed color negative stock.

Although these films aren't designed to be printed on RA-4 materials, they are excellent for scanning.

However, the problem has been processing, with some people resorting to C-41 with sub-optimal results.

The ideal solution is of course to get this film developed in the proper process, ECN-II. Cinelab in Massachusetts is now offering this service.

Although it is not expressly mentioned on their website, it has been confirmed through phone conversations and people are doing it. We should encourage them to start advertising the service on their website, or hey, even here on DPUG!

Pricing is not exact, or hasn't been standardized yet, but it should be $10 or less, plus shipping. Turnaround might be a couple weeks, give or take. The more they get though, the quicker it will become.

I'd recommend sending in your rolls with a short note including your phone #, email address, shipping address and any special instructions.

So PLEASE, spread the word and start rounding up all the short ends you can find. This is an awesome opportunity!

It should be obvious, but I have no affiliation with Cinelab. I'm just excited that they're offering this service and I know that the more people who do it, the better.

It would be nice if others posted labs that will do it as well. I will have to check around here, as the lab I used has stopped doing it.

Thanks for getting these threads going while I was busy. I hope that more people will take part and try out the film.

Quite some time ago I used some professional motion picture photo labs that would process movie film shot in 35mm still cameras. I could get color negs or color slides, or both, and in a hurry. However, the film used back then by major motion picture studios was simply not very good. Anyone who thinks about using such a service should take a look at the quality that comes out from these labs. I hope the film stock has been improved since the old days but let's just say the focus has not been on film in the past few years. It's an exciting concept, however. Woody Woodpecker's "dad" used to show up at one of the labs I used ad he was a bright presence.
