Greetings,

I was under the impression that the 355/9 G-Claron would screw directly into a Copal 3 shutter, however I recently acquired one of theses lenses in barrel and found that this is not the case. The threads are about 55mm or so, nowhere near a Copal 3, and just a hair smaller than a 3S.

The lens is from 1971, and is the plasmat 6/4 design with 67mm filter threads, not the expected 77mm.

Any ideas?

355mm G-clarons were made with at least two thread sizes. Some fit Copal shutters directly, and some don't. The same thing applices to Graphic Kowa, Computar and Kyvyx. If you want to mount the lens directly in a Copal shutter, you'd best verify this before purchase. Yes, I learned the hard way as well.

If you're using the lens for 8x10 work, you may find that you don't need a shutter.

Best thing to do is search for 210 f4.5 Xenar in early Copal 3. It will fit that shutter and the spacing will be correct. It would also work in any of the Compound 3's that once housed a Schneider like 210 Xenar, 300 / 500 Symmar, 210 6.8 Angulon. Other Compound 3's might work but spacing was different among manufacturers. All the Schneiders had the same spacing though. You have a fine lens there.

So there are copal 3 shutters with different sized threads? (I'm not talking about the 3s.) I've not heard that before. My 355 definitely did not fit in a recent Copal 3 shutter.

Yes, When Schneider made that switch Copal spec'd the shutters to their old Compound 3 size for a couple of years. Spacing and thread size are very different than later stuff that was standardized.

Thanks Jim and Peter,

I now know what to look for. Any idea if the design of these early plasmat G-Clarons is the same as the the current? I note on mine that the front and rear groups are identical, while on all the other G-Clarons I have used the rear group was a bit smaller.
