Want to Buy 30" (750mm) APO Germinar or Artar in Copal 3?

Hi all,

I've already posted this over on the LF forum but figured posting here wouldn't hurt. I'm looking for either a 30" (750mm) APO Germinar mounted in a Copal 3 or a 30" Artar mounted in Copal 3. The Copal 3 part is important so please no barrel lenses and I'm not particularly interested in anything in an Ilex. If you have something please let me know. Thanks!

A suggestion,

I know you have specified Copal 3, but if your desired lens/shutter combination does not appear and you are using a camera with a front panel at least 141m square the Sinar shutter with a barrel mounted lens could be an alternative

This is just a suggestion for alternative ways of working if a Copal shutter does not come your way

dude--I don't think you can fit one of them lenses in a copal 3 without severe vignetting--have you ever seen one of these in a copal 3-- I can't say that Ive ever seen or heard of one mounted in a copal shutter.

you want copal in that length--do the apo tele xenar 800 maybe....expensive, but hey---it's readily available and fits the length and shutter spec....

Thanks for the recommendation. A few others have echoed the possibility of a behind the lens Sinar shutter. Thing is I don't know anything about these or even how they work. How do you set and trip the shutter if its behind the board? Can any link to a good source of info on this? I have a 35" Artar in barrel that I'd love to use but its huge. I'm wondering what the max sizes of the Sinar behind the lens shutters is.

Haha, sorry man. Yea, you can fit it in a Copal 3 but it does indeed reduce the max aperture but from what I've been told it is less significant that one would think especially when viewing on a large ground glass. I've heard a few direct accounts from people very happy with the lens in a Copal 3. I'll check out the Xenar 800, don't know anything about that one or its performance yet.

whoa...hay...you know what--if this is for the new deardorff of yours, I got a 6" deardorff packard box that'll fit right on your camera- and any 6" round corner deardorff type camera--it's a big lens board that has a packard in it and accepts a 6" lensboard--so if that lens fits a 6" board, it'll work--it's got sync too---AND a 24" app ronar on the main board with the packard pin/flange mount---NOW..if you want that set, maybe we can talk...I'm thinking I'd like that 35" artar---that's about what I'm looking for for my studio camera

Thanks for the offer man but I've already got a 24 in (the Fujinon 600). I'd considered using a Packard with the 35in Artar but I'm still not sure it would fit and work. I still don't know if I'd even let go of the 35" Artar. Thanks for the offer though. Someone did respond to me with a 30" Artar in shutter but I'm waiting to hear back from them with details on condition etc. Its in an Ilex which is no Copal but it could work for my needs. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. I'm working with limited time on all of this. Need the lens in my hands by the end of April.

Anyway, the Sinar shutter sits behind the front standard of a Sinar and is operated from the side by a big cable rlse - The shutter speeds, from 1/60th to a full 8 seconds are set along an arc sitting above the shutter and to the left as you view from the rear - These shutter speeds are marked on both sides for convenience

A second cable rlse can run between the back of the camera to the shutter which gets the shutter ready via a plunger which is depressed as you insert a dark slide - This can also be done very easily by a little lever/button on the side of the shutter, which is how I operate mine on the Tackyhara (I am considering making a plunger thingie for the back of the Tacky, but probably won't)

It is normal to front mount a Sinar shutter on a wooden camera, but I opted for rear mounting for the balance reasons stated on my blog page

I use the Sinar shutter wherever possible with both shutter mounted and barrel lenses as it give me consistency of exposure across my entire range of lenses

(Hyper-mega-plutocrats with DB mounted lenses can use their Sinar as a very quick camera as the DB mount bit of the Sinar Shutter will close the lens aperture down to the pre-set value as the DDS is inserted via the same cable as the shutter itself)

ahhhh, so you changed your mind about the ilex--yes--they are a much better fit, but still very hard to mount properly--but with your schedule, man, you gotta take what's out there and available---of course $$$$$ does make things available that previously weren't though...

the 35 would be nice to play with--that's about the longest I can put on my studio camera and get 1:1---the 42" I got, even with packard box and it sticking all the way out on a board is still just a hair shy of the draw needed for 1:1---I thought it would be close, and it is, but I ended up on the wrong side of "close"....no real problem, mind you, it just bothers me that I can't do 1:1 with the studio camera with that lens now, you know....that's why that 35 looks attractive--not needed but WANTED, you know...I'm better off probably---I got way too much stuff....
