I'm sure many would have reduced the adapter length to adapt 3/8 to 1/4 but I am tired of that.

Are washers any good idea and I'm thinking.about either metal or rubber ones if available.

Just a bit of drilled plywood should do the trick.
Easily cut to size

There are shorter adapters out there, but they are much harder to find than when it was common for a camera store to have drawers with lots of such miscellaneous things.

I will try to look for them. A quick release plate with 3/8 screw will be nice too.

I had one of those plates for my Manfrotto system - a non-twist architectural one at that - but I think I sold it with the camera I was using it with.
I need to go through my camera bags and tripod heads and prepare an inventory of those plates!

I have both kinds, the old ones that sit flush and these new ones that stick out. Not sure why they make them this way, it wouldn't be hard to make it the old way. We have a store here in the Pacific Northwest called Tacoma Screw, they will make custom screws. I wonder if they could make proper ones if I brought one in. The price may be ridiculous though.

From my quite poor understanding of German, it looks like these are made in USA. Is there a US source? Seems silly to have them sent from the EU.
Honestly, I don't know but in the below link you may find the height 0.5cm and not sure whether that is the correct height.
