I have the opportunity to pick up a 3” f/6.3 B&L Metrogon and am wondering if this lens covers 4x5 wide open? If I’ve done the math correctly it looks to be close. I can’t seem to find much info on this 3” version, mostly it’s the 6” that’s been posted about, but my apologies if I’ve overlooked a thread here.
Also, if anyone has photos from this lens, I’d love to see them.
USAF datasheets show that the lens' resolution wide open falls off by more than 50% from center to 45 degrees off axis, i.e., in 4x5's corners. I don't expect it will allow much in the way of movements. Not a tremendously sharp lens wide open, you'll probably not get acceptable image quality in the corners of printing negs taken with it larger than 8x10.
Thanks Dan - do you have a link to the data sheet or can post the relevant section?
I’m not overly concerned with corner sharpness, I’d be shooting it handheld on a Speed Graphic for closeup action shots, so I’m already limited by motion and hand/camera shake. Currently using a 90mm Angulon - I’d like something a little wider, and I do really like the look of photos taken with the 6” Metrogon I’ve seen online.
Incidentally, that link is from a useful list of links that I posted on https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/ Go there, then to the lenses subforum. There's a sticky "Where to find ..." The first post in that discussion has a link to the list, which is a pdf with bookmarks that serve as a table of contents. Download it, online pdf readers don't present the bookmarks.
