About the Juror: Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose paintings and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including shows in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Delmar, 2001) has received unprecedented critical acclaim, was the winner of The Golden Light Technical
Book of the Year award, and has become the standard reference text in alternative process image making. His second, and significantly expanded, edition of The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes: 2nd Edition was released in February 2008. Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is currently Professor and Chair of Photography at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University.

Eligibility: All prints made using an alternative process are eligible and the exhibition is open to all subject matter. Examples of acceptable processes are albumen, collotype, kallitype, Lazertran, anthotype, Ziatype, carbon, Argyrotype, cyanotype, daguerreotype, gum bichromate, salted paper, photogravure, platinum and palladium, van dyke, hand applied emulsions, wet-plate collodion, and combinations of all of the above. No digital, c-prints, Polaroid or solvent transfers, or gelatin silver prints will be accepted unless combined with an alternative process. Entry Fee: $30 for three images. Send any additional images for $5.00 per image. Check or money order accepted; make check payable to Tilt Gallery.

How to Enter: Jurying will be from digital images only. Minimum of three images per artist. Any additional images can be sent for $5.00 each. Submit Jpeg files on CD only. Files should be 150dpi and no larger than 1000 pixels in the longest dimension. Title each image file with your first and last name, then the image number and the title of the piece, which should correspond to the submission form (example: BobSmith_1_Title, BobSmith_2_Title…). All submission forms must be typed. Images on CD must accurately represent the work being submitted. Tilt Gallery retains the right to reject any work that is not accurately represented by the CD. CDs will not be returned.

Deadline for Submissions: All entries must be received by 5pm on June 16th, 2008.
Notification of acceptance will be sent the week of July 14th. Framed work needs to arrive at the gallery no later than August 4th, 2008.

Award: First place will receive $250 and the artist’s winning piece will be included in a Tilt Gallery Retrospective Show, second place will receive $150, and third place will receive $100.

Ok so you get perhaps a thousand entries at 30 bucks a pop, totaling 30,000 dollars and you are going to award the winners a total of 500 bucks. Nice. Only 29,500 profit for hanging a show.

Sweet.

Dennis, your math may be off a bit, but I get your point. They are more likely to get a couple hundred people entering...or maybe 300. So make that about $10,000 in fees. Minus $500 in awards (they could be far more generous!), advertising expenses, cost of the two openings (catering, set-up,etc), cost of employees putting up and taking down the show, cost of wall space for a month, the honorarium to Christopher James (including airfare and hotel costs...say a total of $3000, but this might be low), shipping costs (and the labor involved) of returning work to the artists , and whatever other expenses I have forgotten. If some pieces sell off the wall, there will be income from that -- for both artist and gallery -- but probably not a whole bunch.

I would love to see higher awards and the shipping of accepted works covered by the gallery both ways. Your estimate of profit might be off by up to 90%.

Having one's alt process prints judged for entry in digital form is frustrating. At least Christopher knows very well what these various process look like and what goes into making them. I am assuming that the awards will be judged in person.

I am seriously considering entering.

It's a cattle call but the draw is James' participation. What's $30 and why should we care if they gross a $1,000,000?

In times of recession (or as Bush says, an economic slow-down) galleries will be struggling to keep their doors open. As a gallery owner (I own 1/33rd of a gallery as a member of an art cooperative) I wish the the Tilt Gallery well.

I think James is savvy enough to make good calls looking at digital representation of the prints.

The task of managing 1000s of prints could be very daunting. This show will probably have a lot of submitters.

I know some galleries will occasionally request framed prints for submission before the judging which makes submitting more expensive. Personally I don't mind CD submissions as it saves wear and tear on my prints.

Anyway it is what it is for better or worse. It provides an opportunity for unknowns to get some exposure of their work. What is especially nice is that the submissions are restricted to alt. processes only.

Many not for profit galleries do these kind of exhibits to help raise needed funding, though it's not clear what the status of the Tilt Gallery is in that regard. It doesn't seem to be non/not for profit.
