Whose dopey idea was it to sell sheet film in odd numbers? Is it the same people responsible for the thing with hot dogs and buns?

Do you mean 'odd' as in 'not even', or odd, as in 'strange'?

Either way, I don't see the issue, if they were sold in boxes of 17 or 39, wouldn't make much difference to me. Or is it about not being an even number so you can't fill a set of film holders fully from one pack?

It's certainly not a problem for me, anyway. If anything, I'd like smaller packs, so I can try different films easily. Kodak does packs of 10 sheets, which is great for me.

Bean counters

Bean counters rule the corporate world. Actor Cary Grant went to a Hilton Hotel and ordered English muffins. He got 1.5 muffin halves. He talked to the owner of the Hilton chain (Paris Hilton's granddad) and was told the bean counters had found that the average person who orders English muffins only eats three halves, not four. After that, every time SuperStar Cary ordered the dish he got two whole muffins, but the peasants did not.

Well film holders hold two, so if you have any OCD tendencies... It's just one of those eternal mysteries, or a way to get people to buy two boxes at a time.

I suppose I don't *have* to fill both sides of a holder every time, but it just seems sensible to me that sheets-per-box should be a multiple of sheets-per-holder. The alternative is a bunch of little hassles, none of which are critical---so I have to pack up, turn on the light, and go out to the fridge to get another box before I finish loading, or something---but why are they necessary?

But don't mind me. I recently had a birthday, and I'm getting in a little bit of curmudgeon practice as the need for it gets ever closer. Get off my lawn.

Very old Kodak film and paper seemed to be by dozens. 1920's/30's maybe. I suppose the extra sheet would be less trouble than the fog level on that stuff though.

Oh, and you really just need to screw up more often. That always solves this situation for me. And, on a slightly more serious note, I don't always shoot both sides before processing. I have a holder in the darkroom right now needing a single sheet.

You did get an even number, they just threw in an extra for free.

It was the same people who make framing mats in 8x10, which is nowhere near the correct format for a full frame 35mm image, the most popular film size. Ditto on the photo labs making 4x5 and 8x10 prints that severely crop your shots.

Sometimes I only need to take one photo. Sometimes I need to take 10 photos. Other times, maybe 5. I need to take precisely 25 photos probably slightly more often than I need to take precisely 50. To me, the unit of measure of sheet film is one, not two. I see that as an advantage, not a disadvantage.

25 sheets are fine by me. I usually buy the same kind of film so by the second box it is even again.

Well, I named no names, but as it happens I *did* just crack open a box of FP4+ last night...

I'm not actually sure why I only bought one; it's not like I expect to stop using this emulsion any time soon. Maybe I was trying to keep the total order cost low to minimize scrutiny from the household CFO.

Maybe you can come out with a 5-sided film holder to make it work out?

I have been purchasing Ilford FP4+ in 100 sheet boxes for quite a few years now, cheapest way to purchase that film in fact; as long as you purchase it from the USA that is, not available in Australia.

Inside you will find four plastic packs of 25 sheets

You just need to have a marking system to know exactly how many sheets you have left, otherwise heading off to get more film would seem like a good way to make a mistake, or maybe introduce dust to the film.

Another reason for getting 100 sheet boxes, they are all from the same batch. In fact with my last order I bought four 100 sheet boxes of Ilford FP4+ and requested and received all from the same batch, heaven.

I just want to know why you don't sell "trial packs" a box (or package for roll films) containing a few sheets of each film (or rolls) so that someone wanting to try out Ilford for the first time can try all the films available... Like a variety pack!
