The buyer is probably one of 'those' who will place it in a 'glass case' for all his/her friends to 'Gag' at being able to spend that amount of money on an item that will probably 'sit in a glass cage' for ever more.. and never have another roll of film 'inserted / exposed. Probably and most likely for the "bragging rights' (only) of being able to spend THAT amount of money

Ken
Oh, come on Ken, you are above this. This is the type of anti-Leica trolling you see on Dpreview from the fraud-tographers who pollute the comments there. As AgX noted, buyers spend a lot more for certain Leicas at auctions. A brand new digital M or S and 3 lenses and you are up to that price. That's the way it is today.

How do you know?

He also might be one of “those” that give back to the comunity, to charity, maybe has a company that creates good job opportunities, maybe has a handicaped kid, or maybe doesn’t drive a car, maybe a Lesbian, maybe one of “those” philantropists that make the world a better place to live in. Maybe a serial killer. Maybe a rock star. Maybe a leica maniac that ate ramen for years in order to be able to afford an object of desire?

There’s way too much jealousy in this world.

Well said.

At least a Leica has some history to it,and is a precision machine.
From abc news
The “holy grail” of Star Wars collecting -- a prototype of a never-released, rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure -- can be yours right now for a few clicks and about a quarter of a million dollars.
An extremely rare action figure depicting a character who spoke just four lines in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is available on eBay for the asking price of $225,000.

That 22000 does not buy you a camera. It is a collectible item that happens to function as a camera. Once people understand that they can see why it is that expensive. It is some obscure version of this and that and whatever. It is a bit like saying why a painting costs a million or two, it is just canvas and paint and you can buy that for $5 at the diy store.

People buy stamps for thousands that cost 5c when they were new, people buy classic cars for a lot more than they were new, etc, etc, etc. They are just collectible things because they are rare and some group of people puts a high value to it.

It is always so funny having these discussions in a film forum. We can all take photos for free with our phones, right? Yet here we are talking about old bits of equipment that is inconvenient and costly to use with no objective measurable improvement over the equivalent digital equipment.

A new Leica MP with a few new fast lenses could run you $22,000.

A new MP with a new 50 .95 is $18,000. One camera, one lens and this is not a rare combo.
Add in a 28 1.4 Summilux and that would be $26,000. One camera, two fast lenses.

And it's value will likely only go down after you buy it.

Most definitely. If you buy new Leica gear, it will take about 50 years for it to be worth what you paid for it.

The new 50 .95 is $12K. I see it used for $6-$7K.

I buy my Leica gear used... actually I buy all my gear used!
