Just received volumes 1 and 2 of this publication for the excellent price of £55 ( I think that’s around $80) both were shrink rapped and I must say I am extremely pleased with both of them. The tri-tone plates are some of the best I have seen and the essays that accompany them are both interesting and thought provoking. I can highly recommended them to anyone with an interest in photography especially contemporary.

Having only had them for a day or so its hard to give an detailed review, nevertheless the initial highlights for me in volume 1 were images by Keith Carter and Jock Sturges (beautiful, albeit controversial portraits) and from volume 2 were images by Cy DeCosse (stunning still life/flower images), Arthur Tress, Kenro Izu(again stunning still life images), Tom Baril, Sheila Metzner

I would love to know what the other volumes are like in particular volumes 3 & 4, both are difficult to find/expensive. Volume 4 looks espicially beautiful and worth having. If anyone has copies that they would like to sell I would be most interested.

Many thanks

I got a pm asking for details on the various volumes of this publication. There are 6 volumes in all and you can find more specific details aobut them here :

One more thing is that I have the trade additions of volumes 1 & 2. I would be interested to hear what quality the Photogravures are in any of the volumes in the deluxe and musuem editions of 'The Journal of Contemporary Photography' as unfortunately the $3000-$12000 is a too high a price for myself.
