210mm 5.6 APO Symmar lens and Copal 1, and Graphex #2...

Two quick questions from a beginner today:

1) after mounting the APO Symmar in the Pacemaker Speed Graphic, will the SG cover close--or, does the lens front prohibit complete closure of the cover?

2) we have the 135mm 4.7 Graflex Optar in a Graphex #2--the back mounting ring is off, but is it possible to unscrew the front element from the shutter, or is some disassembly of the shutter required (we'd rather not force it). Does the rear element unscrew--or, is 'built in' (lack of better term) to the shutter somehow?

1. it will not close with the lens installed

2. Both cells should screw off the shutter. You might need to use some force to get them off.

Q1: not sure but I doubt it will close.

Q2: the front and rear lens elements screw out of the shutter

99.9% to 99.99% of large format lens cells just unscrew from their shutter or barrel. The other .01% to .1% unscrew from their built in mount flange or similar.
Lens cell barrels fuse themselves to the shutter or main barrel by chemical action of their materials and air.
Some are over tightened.

Hold the shutter firmly being careful not to bend or damage levers on the edge of the shutter, its OK to poke a hole in your hand if you wish.
In extreme cases get a rubber strap wrench, http://www.amazon.com/Multi-use-Rub...&qid=1432009747&sr=8-12&keywords=strap+wrench
and use it on the lens barrel and use the jar aid to hold the shutter.
Tighten lens cells to 15 inch pounds to 25 inch pounds when reassembling.

Hey guys... Chill. It's supposed to be fun.

I think it should be "snooty", NOT "snot nose", just sayin' . Not that I am taking sides,either. Just a clarification of semantics. You also could argue that the comment, "we're learning lots" is a booster, a show of support, like, . . . . . YA!!!! there you go! or something like that.. With Chat rooms, you never get to see others facial expressions, or hear the tone in someones voice. I know when I am speaking at work with the crew, we are. . . . all the time- sarcastic, flip,smug, condescending, But in a really really GOOD WAY!!! for real. its our schtick. we've all been working together for years. No complaints. I could see where this could go horribly wrong on Apug!!! Just saying' (again)

the 210 could probably fit if you unscrew the front cell, or use a recessed lens board (a DIY project). You can likely calibrate the Kalart to work with a 210mm lens, I'd think.

Mr. Taylor posts the same question on multiple forms, do you not trust the responses from one form or do you need the confirmation of the second, third, or more? Just asking.

Somewhere in the Speed Help section of Graflex.org help board is a post about the clearances of Speed and Crown Graphics. I responded to the post somewhere back in 1745 to 1850.
Get a 6 inch stainless steel metric ruler and or a 6 inch digital caliper and make some quick measurements for quick answers.

A Kalart rangefinder will only adjust for 101 to 165 mm focal lengths. Hugo Meyer rangefinders were made for a single focal length and only a few common focal lengths.

Depending on the lens focusing characteristics you might be able to fudge the focal length range a little but don't bet on it.
