Jim Fitzgerald and I are pleased to announce our 2026 Carbon Printing Workshop at the Ansel Adams Gallery Darkroom...Wed, April 22nd to Saturday, April 25th, 2026.

https://www.anseladams.com/products/carbon-printing The page has some great views of the working space and workshop in progress.

This is a hands-on workshop that includes two half-day field trips to have each participant make negatives to print during the workshop. The last day (Saturday) is a full day of printing. My goal for the workshop is to give each participant the experience and knowledge to be able to take carbon printing back home and start making prints.

We will be providing two 8x10 cameras, holders, and film for the field trips, along with the processing of the film for the next day's printing. We also provide all the assistance you need, no previous camera use required. One of the purposes of the two field trips is to give you real-world experience and feedback between what you see and how the carbon process translates that into a print. You may, of course, bring your own cameras. Those flying in can mail/ship camera and/or film to the the Ansel Adams Gallery, if needed.

You may also bring negatives to print, including digital negatives, (up to 8x10. We will not be making digital (inkjet) negatives as part of the workshop. If you wish to continue with carbon printing at home using inkjet negatives, this workshop will give you the basics you will need to make and use the materials for the testing and calibration steps for the creation of the negative. Also it will give everyone the experience of using the tools available to fine-tune your carbon printing.

The Ansel Adams has reserved rooms at the Yosemite Lodge for participants to reserve during the workshop. I highly recommend staying in the Valley, if just for ease of getting back and forth to the darkroom. We have had light snow in April that have made the roads questionable for a day. The Camp Curry tent cabins are a less expensive alternative.

Campground reservations in the Valley are not easy to get. December 15th is the first day reservations can be made for during the workshop, and in reality the only day...and one has to be ready and logged in by 7am (PST). https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232447?tab=info

Late April is a beautiful time in Yosemite Valley, the Dogwoods should be blooming and the waterfalls booming. Weather is variable, but well-centered on nice. I hope you can join us! Please message me if you have any questions!
