Saw this in a pile of books getting ready to take to the thrift shop. Out of the 1963 Girl Scout Handbook, in the back listing all the merit badges.

This is just one merit badge out of so many. I have a new respect for what it took these girls to get these merit badges. This one badge seems like quite an achievement, something that takes time and not done overnight.

Just thought I'd post this for general interest, as it caught my eye, and maybe others would be interested to see this also. 1963 was a long time ago, it seems. Don't know what they do nowadays. Click on the image after it opens for larger view.

Thanks for looking, and hope this was of interest,
Jeff

I can't speak for the Girl Scouts, but the current requirements for Boy Scouts can be found here. Note that requirement 4 can be done the APUG or the non-APUG way. They specifically allow either!!

I think that checklist would be a great start for anyone starting in photography. The only dated thing I found (beyond it being film only) was the assumption that the only photographers around would be male. (Although, to be fair, perhaps the more technical/darkroom/professional side of things have traditionally seen more men than women?)

Great find. I'll post a pic of my merit badge for photography, but I'll tell you, you didn't have to demonstrate all of the listed criteria.

Number 8 is hilarious.
"visit one to get his ideas on photography".
So girls can take photos, and get merit badges. But only men can make a living off it enough to be called a 'photographer'.
Ah, the 1960s...

I got the Girl Scouts badge for photography back in the 70s or 80s. I know I don't have my book anymore with the descriptions, but it wasn't quite as much as that one. I think there were "this or that" requirements, too. Such as a-talk with a professional photographer OR b-ask a guidance counselor what you need to become a photographer. I did a week at Girl Scout camp called "shutterbug" week and that's when I did some of the requirements. And it was the first time I saw a print come up in the developer. That would have been around 1979?

I think, and this is how I thought of it back then, that "his" was just a respectful way, back in 1963, to refer to any person out there that might fall into that category (e.g. photographer). Maybe they had in mind a Girl Scout going to visit, for example Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) to gain insight, perspective, and knowledge toward earning the badge? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_Lange
