I thought it was kind of cool to stumble upon a sealed 100-foot roll of this old fine-grain film. "Process by Dec 1951" - OK fine I was a bit overdue on that but it could still be usable!

Alas, no... vinegar syndrome!! I had never seen that on sealed unexposed film before. Yuck. A complete sticky smelly mess. I couldn't even salvage the camera spool.

I've never heard of this film....some kind of specialist movie product? Presumably nitrate base?

I think it was often used for shooting rear-projection backgrounds and such. No, it's safety film. Acetate is what turns to vinegar, nitrate turns to something much worse!

I have a couuple of "found" rolls of 16mm Kodachrome (the real old Kodachrome) that were in with old movie camera that developed VS. Being in an air tight can is the perfect environment for the VS to fester.
