Am selling somewhat reluctantly a Leica rangefinder Camera & lenses which have been in my family for the last 7 decades. My father bought this camera in the late 1940’s. It was the first camera I ever photographed with, in the early 1960’s. The camera is a black-bodied Leica Model III - serial number 209585. It comes with the original classic 50cm f/3.5 Elmar lens - the retractable lens which pops out - as well as an optically superb Canon f/2.8 35mm lens. The Canon lens has a nice leather carrying case, and also comes with the original Canon 35mm viewfinder, which functions very well but is in need of repair/TLC (some of the interior viewfinder glass is smudged or damaged). There are no lens caps (neither front nor rear) for either lens; and no lens hoods. Camera also comes with the original brown leather Leica camera case that my father bought with the camera.

Camera body and lens recently received a fairly thorough CLA/cleaning, lube & adjustment, from Manfred Mueller at ICT Camera in San Jose, Calif., a superb Leica technician. Mr. Mueller repaired the cloth shutter, verified & adjusted shutter speeds, and did a thorough cleaning of the original Elmar lens.

Am selling because although the camera is nearly 80 years old, it is still in excellent working condition and deserves to be used on a regular basis, and not just sit on my mantelpiece where it looks beautiful but gathers dust. As you can see from the attached photos, the camera has been well-used - but never abused - during its lifetime. This is not a pristine untouched showroom model; it’s taken hundreds of rolls of film.

A minor note: the camera is still superb for black & white photography, which it’s been used for more than anything else. The Canon lens, though not possibly as well known as the Elmar, is actually a truly fine lens (and the smaller sibling of the Canon 28mm which Garry Winogrand used years ago).

I will not consider trades, money orders from Outer Mongolia, or anywhere else. Due to the prohibitively expensive nature of international shipping costs, and also the lack of shipping security, I am reluctant to sell to buyers outside of either the United States or Canada. Shipping in the U.S. will be a flat $25 (via U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail); slightly higher for Canada. PayPal is the preferred form of payment.

Bottom line: this camera is a classic, and the real deal. It’s been used, cared for and appreciated by 3 photographers in my family; now it needs the right new home.

NOTE: There are multiple detailed photos of the camera, lenses, viewfinder, case, etc, available on serious request

break my heart -- have you no children who can appreciate and use a family heirloom? If not now, sometime in the future?

Welcome to APUG

Wish you could pass it on in the family.
I have my father IIIF RDST and it will go to my grandson. Right now he is 3.
My M2 will go to my other grandson who is 9, we had our portrait taken when he was two with both of us holding that camera.

BTW, welcome to APUG, get involved.

Don't do it! You'll regret it forever!
Load it up and take some photos!

still for sale

Thanks for all the emotional and comic replies - but in the first place, my children are musicians and not photographers (they love fine instruments but, honestly, are relatively unmoved by cameras and/or lenses) - and in the second place, not only will I not regret it forever, but the thing I regret the most is looking at this wonderful old camera every day and thinking that instead of just sitting on my shelf/mantel gathering dust, it COULD - and SHOULD - be used by a photographer somewhere on a daily basis.....someone who cares not only about history but also likes the feel of fine, old, functional tools.

But, apparently - or seemingly - due to the lack of replies and/or interest, such photographers may be in shorter supply than I thought.

In this community is there really no one interested in what has to be the nicest old camera I've ever seen/held/used?

Miguel, do you think you might have better luck at RFF?

(curious to see you pop up over here instead of at one of Amin's places )

Quite the contrary. I see lots of really nice Leica LTM bodies and gorgeous LTM lenses sell here on this site.

Not only is the camera a gem, the fact that it is black makes it even more unique and collectable.
Is there no one in this community interested in such a camera?
ME! ME! ME! ME!
I shoot wannabe Russian clones and love the cameras...the look, the feel, the pictures. What I hate is the unreliability of the clones.
Alas, Russian clones are in my budget if I save and find a good deal.
a Leica?
I can only wish and dream.

I am sure lots are interested but wanting and being able to buy are two different things.
....at least for me.

1936 Leica III w/Elmar 50cm & Canon 35mm + Canon Viewfinder + Leica Case $125...

I think everybody thinks it's a beautiful camera. I just thought someday when you are gone and your kids missed you they could pick up your camera and remember a time when you held it and they could remember all those in your family that touched it.

I'm holding on to a camera that was my best friends camera. He loved it because it was his Dad's camera. It wasn't a Leica but it meant something special to him. He gave it to me to hold onto. It was the camera that him and his daughter would shoot with.
Then he killed himself. I had the camera redone and it is stored until his daughter is old enough to receive it and then I will give it back to her. It holds memories for her of her Dad.

I think people might not want to take that away from your kids.

That was the reason behind my reply to you. Hey everybody wants a Leica they are works of art.

Greg

there probably is -- sometimes things take time and you have to flex the price a bit.

I don't want it because I already have a I, a II, a IIIC,F, M3, M4, CL....gad.

but i am not opposed to you selling, be clear, just like to remind folks that future generations sometimes regret what dad sold. I know I do.

Appreciate the advice, summicron1 - I do realize sometimes things take time. But with regards to the second part of your suggestion - about being willing to 'flex the price a bit' - I think - let me amend that, I *hope* - that the "obo" which I put in my listing....will make it perfectly clear to potential buyers that I am open to considering anyone's 'best offer'. However, if that wasn't clear before, I hope it will be, now.

Please don't be offended: your price, though it is a nice and perhaps rare camera, apparently is a bit high or it would have been snatched up by now or you'd have gotten some offers. Yes, you've said OBO but perhaps any offers being considered are significantly below your ask as to not even be considered offering. Also you just joined APUG and have made no other posts than in this thread.

Thanks for the advice, Richard, I appreciate it. The weird thing is, though - I was considering changing / editing my original listing - and reducing the asking price - but apparently APUG doesn't allow users to edit their original for sale/classifieds listings! Or maybe this is just a restriction placed on relatively new members, like me; but, regardless, it's a little disturbing. If you have any ideas how to rectify this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

And, yes, it's true that I'm a relatively new APUG member with limited posts. But I'm a long term photographer and, specifically, analog/film shooters, with more than half a decade's worth of semi-serious photography under my belt, so hopefully that may count for something, somewhere.

But, seriously - if you - or anyone else - has any idea how to actually EDIT my original listing, I'd appreciate knowing what it is.

Miguel, like a lot of vBulletin forums, there is a "timeout" which means that after a period (I can't remember exactly how long at APUG) you cannot go back and edit any of one's posts.

It's not a function of newness or anything to be disturbed about.

So if you want to change the price, simply add to the thread with another post stating what your new price is.

A few more pictures - of the Elmar lens -
