180mm lens with 4x5 format enlarger

Has anyone tried to use a 180mm lens on an Omega D2V enlarger or other 4x5 format enlarger?

A friend has a chance to buy a 180mm lens which he plans to use on the Omega D2V enlarger he just got from me, which is fitted with a 4-1/2" cone for the 150mm lens I used with it. Nothing in the Omega instruction manual mentions any lens longer than 150mm.

I'm sure it's possible to put a 180mm lens on the 4-1/2" cone, but does anyone know what the result would be when printing 4x5 negatives? I'm assuming that it will work, but the image on the baseboard will be somewhat smaller than if using a 150mm.

Measure the bellows and do the math if you're worried. I'd also check the size of the mount to avoid getting a custom lensboard.


You're right that basically you'll be making smaller prints. I doubt it would cause a problem for me on my Beseler but I don't know how long the Omega bellows are.

In general, a 180 mm lens will be fine for printing 4x5" negs, coverage should be very good, maximum potential print size will be smaller BUT if your enlarger uses helical focusing mounts instead of a bellows you will have major problems if you use a lens cone intended for a 150 mm lens simply because it will be 30 mm too short - if it focuses at all, it will not focus as close as with a 150 mm lens. Simple test is to set and focus the enlarger for an average print size and then look to see if you have a further 30 mm extension available (or if you could easily make an extension).

I have an older Wolly 190mm lens I use on the D5-XL for smaller prints from 4x5, but it typically racks out the bellows pretty far. No reason you can't use one, but no good reason to have to if you have a 135 or 150. Not sure if the D2 will have enough extension to make it work. tim

Thank you for all the replies. I will pass this on to him. This enlarger does use bellows, so hopefully he can use a 180mm.

I'm giving him the APUG url and encouraging him to join us. In my opinion, there's no place on the Internet that provides the rich resources and support as APUG.
