My 5x4 Kodak readyload holder died. Now I get to choose again. My choice comes down to using 160PortraVC, which I've been fairly happy with, or then new Fujifilm Pro 160C. The reason for this choice is that I can get them in readyload/quickload form, and I like negative films. I'm going to choose the film, then buy the holder that supports that film.

I'm using the films for landscape work, often with long exposure times. Both seem to have excellent reciprocity characteristics. Both seem to be relatively fine grained. Both seem to have reasonable colors and tonality.

Can anyone where with experience with both help me out with some pros and cons?

Bruce,

Why not get a Polaroid 545i holder, then you can shoot either one of the films....

I don't want to use either film. I want to use just one of these two films. Do you like one film better than the other one? If you do, which one and why?

Well, I was just wondering, I am a big fan of Fuji films, I like the tonality and graduations in the fuji over the kodak films, but film is a very personal experiance, I have a couple of 545i's so I can use either and am not tied into one particular brand of film..

There are often times, I will shoot both brands, so I can get different renditions of the same scene, but if I was tied down to one, I would go with the fuji, but as I said, it is a very personal choice, and there are many here that will tell you that kodak would be their choice, I think you owe it to yourself to try both and then choose which one will work for your particular needs..that is why the 545i comes in so handy, you don't have to choose a brand, you can shoot both of them.

I am the opposite. I don't like the Fuji neg films. Portra NC is the only kodak product I use, this includes BW, because I love the colors of of the NC. COlor Transparency is Fuji. Dave is right. You can only say for yourself. Maybe you can borrow a 545i and try both to see which you want to use. Then buy the coresponding holder to go with your film choice.

The current Kodak single-sheet Readyload holder is compatible with both Readyloads and Quickloads. I use both with my Readyload holder and everything works fine. See http://www.butzi.net/reviews/readyquick.htm.

I believe Rich Seiling of West Coast Imaging a couple years ago preferred 160VC to NPS, although I don't recall exactly why anymore. I haven't asked him about Pro 160S or C.

They are both good neg films Bruce , it really comes down to which colour balance you prefer, and if the normal or more contrasty version of the emulsion are more suitable for your landscape work. I shoot mainly portraits and am very happy with the results I get with Fuji Pro 160s , and for more general photography Fuji Pro 160c, or Fuji Reala.

POLAROID makes the type 55 b/w film that gives you a print and a negative. You have to clear the negative in a bath, then wash and dry.

From what I've seen between these two films is the Kodak VC film is more saturated then the Fuji 160C version. I think the Fuji may have more contrast. I would also say the Fuji is finer grained, but may not be as sharp as the Kodak. I prefer Kodak colors then Fuji normally. Ive also heard the Fuji 160C can have strange color effects when overexposed.
