Heres an extremely nice copy of a lens that doesnt often appear in the FS section. This is Rodenstocks original multicoated 7-element 150mm f/5.6 Apo-Sironar, the one with the 80° field of view and 252mm image circle at f/22, enough to cover 5x7 with movements. This series acquired a yellow racing stripe and was renamed Apo-Sironar-W when the red-stripe Apo-Sironar-S (75°) family was introduced (and at the same time the existing 72° Sironar-N line gained a white stripe and was renamed to Apo-Sironar-N). The 80° lenses were offered in just three focal lengths (150, 210, and 300), and being bigger and more expensive they never sold in the same numbers as the S or N families. This led to their discontinuance a number of years ago, and they seldom surface here or at auction.
Not many modern f/5.6 150s have comparable coverage. The ones Im aware of are the Super-Symmar HM (larger and considerably heavier), the inside lettering Fujinon-W (smaller, half the weight, not multicoated), and the coverage-monster Super-Symmar XL (about the same weight as the SSHM, with a much much larger field of view and stratospheric price). Of these, only the SSXL remains in production. Theres also the large and heavy f/8 Nikkor-SW, also discontinued, but thats it to my knowledge.
This examples glass looks extremely good, with no obvious cleaning marks, haze, or fungus. Theres a small bit of dust inside, nothing out of the ordinary for a used lens. There are no significant dents or dings, just a few faint marks and scratches from use on the exterior cell barrels, some of which are visible in the photos. 72mm filters go in smoothly as they should. The Compur 1 shutter speeds sound appropriate, and the shutter has click stops every ⅓-stop (extra coolness points for sure). The top marked speed is 1/500, just a little faster than a Copal 1 and ideal for those 5x7 action shots . It weighs 432 grams (15-¼ ounces) with the included original caps and retaining ring. The rear cap looks nice and fits well, the front cap is loose and has 150 written on it in some kind of white ink or paint. There are two thin spacer shims between the front cell and the shutter, be careful not to lose these if you remove the front cell for any reason!
You need this lens if youre a 5x7 shooter. In fact, if you shoot 5x7 youre probably in a cold sweat just from reading this advert. When Kerry Thalmann sold copy his a couple of years ago he listed it at $800. This beauty can be yours for $625 plus insured traceable shipping ($19 in the US, more for international depending on country and type of service). I will not ship this lens without tracking and full insurance. PayPal is OK, Postal Money Order is better as it doesn't feed the eBay/PayPal oligopoly, checks work too but must be in US$ and must clear. Because of the insurance I have no choice but to declare full value if shipping internationally.
