120 Slide Scanning

I recently shot 3 rolls of Velvia 120 and took them to my local lab for processing. I waited a week to have them back and was hit with the fee of 33$ a roll: 11 for processing and 22 for scanning. This seemed really high to me and I looked at Dwayne's and they only charge $4.95 for scanning. I realize that my local lab will be more but should it really be 5 times as much? I asked them to scan it all to 1 CD so is it possible that they charged me the total scanning price on each roll?

I do love the way the pictures came out, it was my first time using velvia and the results are amazing! You can see my pictures in the flickr linked in my signature.

It is hard for us to judge based on the limited information you gave but it depends on the size and quality of the scans. If you received high quality and high resolution scans, your price wasn't too bad. If they are low resolution files at 8 bits, then you might as well have gone for the cheaper scans.

I suspect that the cheaper scans were done on an automated roll scanner and the others were may have been done by hand. Ultimately the quality of the scans should determine which was a better deal.

FWIW A high quality scan of a single frame will be more than the higher cost you paid for the entire roll to be scanned and processed.

A high quality scan of every frame of a 120 roll of film will not fit on a CDROM. I have my doubts about it fitting on a single DVD-R (single layer) for that matter. A single TIFF from a 6x6 image can easily run in the neighborhood of 500MB.
