120 film curls back sticky tape.

Hi

Just a question. I loaded a roll of 120 film onto a development reel. The sticky tape end curled back and stuck onto the film. Potentially could this have residue marks in the image(s)?

You mean the tape itself stuck onto emulsion somewhere where there's an image? It will likely damage the emulsion. The film also won't get developed and fixed properly under any residue it leaves. That frame probably won't be great.

I always try to tear the tape across. Maybe it would be a better idea to cut it with scissors.

Do mean that what happened was as Don described i.e. the tape came off and then stuck on the area of film that has pictures or that when you removed the tape from the backing paper it curled itself onto the end of the film?

If it was the latter then no problem as there is no picture there. When I remove the tape from the backing paper I do what may have happened to you by accident but in my case deliberately, namely, curl the tape onto the film

If it curled back onto the the other side of the film after you removed film from paper backing, it will be okay. I'm not sure why you didn't remove it. I do this out of habit.

I leave the sticky tape on the film and fold it over to stick to the emulsion side of the film. It stiffens the end of the film which I find makes it easier to load the film onto a reel.

I took the backing paper off. The paper dropped to the floor completely. The tape still stuck to the film. I didn't take the tape off or fold it back. I let go of that end and it curled up and the adhesive part I had to pull it off so it was not sticking which I presume was the other part of the film.

Oh I see. I usually load the film at the end without the sticky tape. I finish up with the end with the tape.

One time in the past I did tore it out but on one instance, when it was torn it went a bit diagonal and cut into a image.

Fold the tape over the end of the film. It makes that end stiffer and the reel loading easier.

I'm with you. I just fold it over the end and call ity good enough. Never had any problems doing it that way. I don't care to try and take the tape off the film itself. If you try to remove the tape from the film itself you might just rip the film, if it's of the thin variety. Also, I have watched in the dark when I did pull the tape from the film and it produced static electricity enough to light or make a glow when it was peeled off. JohnW

I just cut that last part of the film, with a scissor. I don't like anything contaminating my chemicals (i reuse the developer back into the bottle).
