personally, i don't really need anymore gear but i thought it would be nice to make believe
since i tend to have a wandering eye anyways.

if i had $1000 what camera and 1 lens should i get ?
i already have tripods and semi-centennial stands big and small
and a way to process film so i don't need to worry about that.
and i don't mind large format or mini format.

i take a variety of types of photographs from portraits and environmental portraits to
architecture and record/landscape/site photographs. if the camera needs specialized film holders and whatnot
i will make believe i already have them as well. i don't mind redundancy what should i spend my money on, and why?

thanks

Obviously a Hasselblad with the 80mm or 100mm lens. There are no competitors. Heck you knew that answer to your question before you posted it.

Portraits or environmental portraits could be done with $39 Holga and $5 film P&S if you have gift as photographer.
Let's assume you have it (the gift).
Then you should observe what from others photography you like.

This is how you could determine the 1K kit you want.

Like HCB, get Leica with 50 Cron.
Like Yousuf Karsh, get 8x10 view camera.
Like Jane Bown, get Oly with 50 and 75mm primes.
Vivian Maier, Rolleycord.
etc.

Often each known photographer has bound with specific gear. Because it is the gift and skills of photographer first, but gear brings some specific look as well.

Well, I am not sure $1K is enough for a Hasselblad kit.
I started to think about it few days ago and making some financial modelling and that's what I have for a minimal set (KEF EX+ prices, USD):
Body
$500

A12 Back
$300

Lens, 80mm
$600

Lens hood, metal
$80

RRS plate
$55

Total
$1535
If it were my 1000 for a camera to do all things competently, it would probably be a Linhof baby Technica.
It has enough movements to get by for architecture and product work, small enough to be hand-holdable when you want, can use roll film or sheet film, and lots of choices for lenses.

Lots of others that I can think of if any one of the things on the list needed to be a priority.

I was speaking [posting] tongue in cheek because it is only money and because it was one of those silly topics that came up in the college dorm room bull sessions:
Would you rather have all the money in the world or the most beautiful women in the world?
Would you rather have many beautiful women or would you rather have a sail boat?
It you were stuck on a deserted island with no film supplies nor processing capabilities which camera would you want?
If you had to choose only one camera to use for the rest of your life which camera would you choose?
In the James Taylor recording "I see fire and I see rain" did the woman leave him or did she die?
What photographic item did you have for breakfast?

A cave, a pinhole, a stone chisel

Well, that's Poe's Law for you!
But honestly I was more interested in something like "where did you come from with those outrageous prices!"

Fujifilm 6x9 rangefinder camera: Seriously good stuff and totally undervalued. Handles good enough that you might be tempted to use it for snapshots too, but it's really best with tripod (or at least held steady) in order to fully realize the Fujinon lens's resolving power.

For a somewhat looser shooting style where there may be a touch of camera shake, a 6x4.5 rangefinder camera can be a better pick and you get 16 shots per roll of 120 film versus 8 for the 6x9 camera. Fujifilm GS645zi is an easy recommendation here.

A cave, a pinhole, a stone chisel  is still better than Micro$oft Visio.

$1000 for a dream camera would be a Hasselblad or a Rolleiflex. My dreams have already come true.

thanks for your suggestions so far !

its funny, even if i had $1000 to spend
i probably wouldn't have thought of the cameras suggested so far

whlle i see the value and usefulness of a MF camera, one has never really been
my main-squeeze, except for IDK in the mid 1980s ... if i HAVE had TO use 12o film
it has been in a roll film adapter in the back of a technical camera ...

=== a question for the hassy and rollei suggesters
aside from loving the camera/s for whatever personal reasons you love them
what other reasons can you give me for dumping my $1000 into that camera ?
(barry, i already KNOW why to get a linhof  )

In the past few months, I sold all my cameras except for a Nikkormat I made out of spare parts, and my Super Graphic. And there's no guarantee the Super won't be heading for the door either. I'm through with buying or owning cameras. I'll use what I got and just take pictures. Going through the economic times I've been going through changes a person. I don't see myself ever going back to having cameras and gear. And a Nikkormat is as fine a 35mm camera as was ever made. It'll do just fine.

thanks for your post !
i agree, and don't plan on
buying anything new anytime soon ..
but my $1000 dream camera is just an exercise in
making believe i actually have $$ to spend, and making believe
i really need ( or want ) another camera ..

Why hasselblad or Rolleiflex? Because they each are the best in their class in every category but affordability. Best design, best build quality, and best optical performance. (The Rolleiflex sl66 may give the the hasselblad a run.) 120 format is the best combination/compromise between portability and technical quality.

Just my opinion. Ymmv and that's okay.

The reason I might choose a Rollie would be because of it's relative simplicity and light weight. They are also very versatile cameras within the context of being a fixed lens TLR.

Since a single lens is part of the setup, I'd shy away from a Hasselblad because it doesn't bring much to the party with that as a limitation, though removable backs are a nice plus.
Within this context, I'd choose an SL66 over a Hasselblad due to bellows focusing.

I'd get a Spotmatic for $50, a 58mm F/1.2 for $300, and spend the rest on hotels nearby some great National Park!

Mamiya 7 with a 65mm lens.

Or a Plaubel Makina wide.

hi matt and apug19..
the medalist II is a sweet camera, and the change to 120 by mr ruth at bald mountain
is worth every penny he charges ...
and save the rest of the $$ for film ..

i guess i can do paralax control like i used to do with my enlarger's bellows and tilting the easel
and stopping way down ...

I didn't think so either, but I got a Hasselblad 500 c/m off the bay this summer for under $1000 (lens, body, back, WLF.) The lens included was not all as described, though it shoots well in the right conditions. I added a Plannar C 80 from KEH and the whole thing came in under $1000 (not including the import taxes I had to pay.)
