10" Commercial Ektar Lens In Copal Shutter?

I know it can be custom done but I'll never understand why one would choose the Copal seven blade aperture over the nice round Ilex. At any rate, I just bought a 10" Commercial Ektar mounted in a Copal #3-S shutter. The front cell uses an adapter but the rear cell screws straight in. Out of curiosity I tried to move the cells to an Ilex #4 but they don't fit.

This is a 1961 model Ektar lens. There are no custom markings on the shutter body, cells or the adapter.

QUESTION #!: Did E.K. ever factory-mount their Commercial Ektar lenses in Copal shutters?

QUESTION #2: If they didn't is there any way to determine who did the work?

I'm trying to determine whether or not I should keep it. It arrived with far more cosmetic damage than was indicated in the auction. It's functionally sound though.... unless there's an issue with cell mismatch or misalignment.

I'll never understand that either. The Ilex is a swell shutter.

Re Q#1: I'm no expert in that area but I don't think so.

Oh... one thing I do remember hearing is that the Eastman Kodak Ilex were different from the "regular" Ilex. That could be why it didn't fit.

I've been pondering the idea of having the Ektar cells re-fitted to a #4 Ilex and using the Copal 3-S for a 305mm Computar because it's a direct fit. But... I really want the Computar more and having one fit into an Ilex #5 with a nice round aperture shouldn't cost any more than having the Ektar re-fitted.

I looks like the rear cell does have an adapter to reduce the diameter, but maybe the pictures are deceiving.

As mentioned above. Illex shutters made for Kodak lenses have different threads than the standard ones. You would need an Illex originally made for the lens. That's going to be tough to find unless you stumble onto a really trashed Ektar in shutter.

Measure your cells. The rear appears to be in an adapter.

Your shutter is 1985 - ish. 2nd gen Copal 3 with chrome selector ring. In fact I never saw them call it a 3S until about that time frame. So someone has done a fine job of retro-fitting. 305 Computar f9 in that shutter trumps the he!! out of the ubiquitous Kodak.
