Maybe the Vartas you bought were old stock. Varta batteries are generally not all that bad.

I tend to use either Duracell or Energizer lithium cells (DL 1/3 N is the Duracell part #; it substitutes for two LR44 or MS76 button cells). Duracell MS76 silver oxide batteries are good too.

Most of my cameras don't use batteries, but for the few that do, I have been buying them at the dollar store. $1 for 5. They work fine in my ME supers, K1000 and KX, and seem to last about as long as the name brands that cost twenty times the price.

Uh, oh... I just bought four of them because the two in my FM2n seem to be running out of power. However, the current ones came with the camera when I bought it 2+ years ago and they have served me fine with intermittent use (the batteries were always left in the camera).

Were the offending Varta batteries alkalines? If so, I recommend switching to either Silver Oxide or Lithium batteries.

No Tom,they were silver oxide.I took them back to the shop where I bought them and the manager replaced all 4.Must have been a bad batch.
As a side note,do button cell's discharge if they are stored side by side , loose in a plastic container?

I've been using the Duracell ( DL 1/3 N is the Duracell part # ) or Energizer lithium batteries for about 20 years, and they work great. Last a very long time, and are impervious to extremeley cold weather.

It really comes down to an "either/or" choice.

I buy "bulk purchase" on eBay.

The LR-44's that you find (many of them Varta's) are cheap. But, yes, they have an short life-span.

I've yet to find a good source for quality, reliable SR-44's.

I've used these for SR44's to put in the adaptor on my Lunasix 3. I don't know if they ship to the US, but if you don't ask you never know!

I use Wein Cell batteries in my old F with Ftn Photomic finder. You can get them at www.weincell.com. I believe that they have a 1.35V Zinc/Air battery, model MRB625 (replaces PX625 & PX13), that will fit on your Canon F-1.

I've been using 1.5 volt alkaline button cells - labeled A76 - in my manual focus Nikons (FM, FM2, FE2, F3) for years (10 at least) since I found them packaged as replacements for a "Night Bobby" lighted fishing float in the fishing tackle aisle at Walmart. They may not last as long as the MS76s or the three volt lithiums but they are dirt cheap in comparison. Beware and use a volt meter to check voltage of any substitute cells you use as there is at least one cell - I forget the number - that appears identical to the MS76 but produces only 1.3 volts and will throw your metering way off (to the over exposed side as I recall)
