I've been doing some HABS processing for a client today which was fun. I used just-replenished XTol, fresh TF5 fixer, and greatly extended the wash times. I also added a 1:19 selenium stage and did final rinse in Sistan, the last part being not required. I was able to program this into my Jobo ATL2500 which made it all handy, and the Expert Drums are of course, the best.

The problem I have now is that I have 1L of 1:19 selenium toner that has processed about 17 sheets of HP5+. There are no HAZMAT facilities near by to take it off my hands. I'm guessing running it through my silver recovery system is not going to help me here. Any ideas? How long will it last? How many more sheets can it handle? How the heck do I get rid of this stuff?

Regarding disposal...

Somewhere / somebody in your region (Bath is not that backwoods! ) must run a household hazardous waste collection day. I'd bottle it up well and take it to one of these episodic events.

I certainly would not run it through a silver recovery system lest the selenium 'gunk up' (that's the technical term!) the electrodes.

As for your other questions... sorry no idea.

If your drains run to a municipal sewage treatment plant then I'd put that 1L of 1:19 selenium toner down the drain. I reckon the amount of selenium involved would be vanishingly small compared to the amount of selenium in the city's pipes coming from people washing their hair in ordinary selenium based anti-dandruff shampoo. Selenium shampoo runs at about 2.5% selenium sulfide!

Just don't evaporate it!
In liquid form it isn't particularly concerning.
If you let it dry, and then the dried material becomes airborne, and someone breathes it in, then it is very concerning.

Save it and reuse. In fact with replenishment it's nearly eternal.

If you have city sewers thats a trivial amount to pour down the sewer.

I agree with fgorga, it would be strange if there no were not such a facility nearby.
If it had been fibre based paper, then in my experience your Selenium solution would have a very weak effect after 17 8x10”’s, but with negatives might last a little longer.

What mshcham says: keep it and reuse it. The stuff keeps ages and you could try to use it on some prints, either for making the blacks a bit deeper or to tone it further.

It keeps forever, but might precipitate a bit of black powder. Just filter it before use.

You may need/want to use it again down the road.
