Ilford is cheaper in some places, and more expensive in others. Their distribution system is very different than KodakAlaris', and as such different factors affect it differently.
They are also a much smaller manufacturer, and have no colour products. But like Kodak, they are limited to a...
The sub-contracting manufacturer for chemicals for KodakAlaris has changed, and with it, the catalog numbers on many of the products. The products from the new manufacturer should be similar in performance, if not exactly the same in compounding. The retailers "discontinue" the old catalog...
Thanks for the update.....I am sure my friendly local camera shop won't be very happy but it's a good problem to have....too much demand! It's one of my favourite colour films too so I'm not thrilled by the shortage but it it indicates an ongoing revival that's great. As for the 65mm news...
Update:
I've got the information from KodakAlaris that the special situation concerning ColorPlus 200 film (see above) will probably continue until this autumn. Demand is so high, that (quote) "as soon as one shipment is out to the distributors, we get immediately double volume of that shipment...
we will have to agree to disagree. All products start at a high price and settle down at what the market will bear over time. If you want to test the market or reset the settled price, jack the price way up, then gradually lower it over time. What the market will bear is the definition of...
In the MBA I was teached that optimal strategy is not that one.
Look, Jeff Bezos and ex-wife are not that rich because of "charging as much as possible".
Best is not charging as much as possible but what it's optimal for highest profits in the long term, or for the short term if you need...
It could be the lens or the scan or the lumiere industrial generation, that technology evolved over time. The dry plate emulsion has a high resolving power for luminance, regarding (the less important) color resolution it is 4 million particles per sq inch.
OK, but in this debate let's...
No, Henning no...
What I say is that Foma sells 8x10 sheets at 2.38€, including conversion, so trying to justify the 27€ per Portra sheet from conversion is a plain fallacy you have thrown, just being clear.
To me 27€ per sheet is a plain abuse, I won't buy it. Do it it you want.
Yes, but let me add that Harrow was that inefficient due chronic lack of investnent, at the end Alaris lost that industrial capability because they lacked management skills and investment drive, as all money was sinked in kpp2.
...never seen a film factory from the inside - know all that much better.
O.k., we have all got your message. And your other message that KodakAlaris is always the devil.
Looks like you feel fine in your strange fact-free bubble. Enjoy it.
But I am out here and will not waste any more time with...
...being earned to be less than what would be achieved if the expected return from the sales was invested elsewhere.
If the prices offered for that business are to low, those pension security officials have indicated they will have KodakAlaris continue tgo operate that business and earn that...
Alaris sold Harrow - an incredibly inefficient production facility due to age and over-capacity - and focused their production at the facility in Colorado that they continued to own a leasehold interest in (along with Carestream).
Carestream is the result of Eastman Kodak selling their X-ray...
Frank, you miss something quite intresting, who has the distribution rights is Alaris, not EK. Most of that crazy overprice is sinking in the KPP2-Alaris black hole, that have 1.7bn deficit.
To worsen things, Alaris and its exclusive distribution rights are for sale, so at EK they have no idea...
Have you been in touch with Eastman Kodak/Alaris to point out the error of their ways? I am sure after you explain everything to them, they will realize their miscalculation. Less expensive film for us and higher profits for them: it's a win-win. Let us know how that works out.
What demand? At 27€ per shot? Kodak is the single CN sheet supplier, in the BW there are many brands: ilford, rollei, foma. EK would sell CN LF enough, problem is that EK has the KA hooligans in the midle that say that a sheet has to cost 27€ in the EU, this may be optimal for KA, but it...
Sorry, I was not clear, RA-4 is made by a Canadian company in CO, USA. Company is Carestram that is owned by the canadian Onex. Alaris lost their paper manufacturing facilities in the UK from severe missmanagement and now they have to outsource from the canadian corporation.
Nonsense. Leaving the unattractive BW paper market was a smart move. In that market no money could have been made for more than a decade. Just look at Ilford's numbers: Decreasing demand until last year! And just look at the current difficulties ADOX is facing (see the BW forum).
Lies, lies...
Instead I will give you examples about how certain corporations do well their job in the photo business and others do fail.
For example, Kodak lost their BW photopaper business long ago, while other manufacturers today enjoy a privileged position in that sector.
Alaris is an specially...
...is really working.
There is no colour emulsion making and coating factory in Canada at all, and therefore also none who works for KodakAlaris. Their RA-4 paper is made in the US.
Also your permanent bashing of KodakAlaris being generally the "bad guys" ripping the consumers off and Eastman...
you can say the same thing about every company who sells digital cameras. Expending time and energy on something that you cannot change or control is pointless. It’s either more than you’re willing to pay or it isn’t.
I'm a total amateur.
27€ per shot is way more I can pay, but please understand that I'm not angry because I can't pay that amount, I'm angry because Alaris is to destroy what remains of C-41 LF photography, destroying a cultural heritage for ever.
The customer squeezing policy Alaris plays...
sigh... it’s painfully obvious that you’re complaining for no other reason than you don’t think it should cost that much.
do us all a favor: go open an online storefront that carries exclusively large format sheet film, then price your product so that you can stay in business for the volume...
Industrial storage is under $2 per m3 a month, even in the case you have your storage in an apartment in the most expensive city a 1002 apartment has 250.000 liters so you can keep there around 1 million 8x10" boxes if you want and still be living there. Space cost under $1 and around a 2%...
...talking about.
you are not taking into account how charitable a particular business is choosing to be in supporting large format. KodakAlaris needs the money and is therefore not being as charitable. Foma on the other hand is the generic white label mfg and sells an absolute ton of smaller...
...Kodak employees. They are not in bankruptcy but technically they are there as they have a deficit of $2.7 bil.
"The sole shareholder of KodakAlaris is the Kodak Pension Plan (‘KPP2’), a UK pension fund which acquired it for US$325 million in cash when it became clear that Eastman Kodak had...
My understanding that KodakAlaris is owned by a British pension fund who got it when Kodak went through bankruptcy. The current owners are a bunch of pensioners who are concerned with their individual pensions I assume. Arguing they should put the public first isn't a good argument. Now...
If they want the cash now, selling large format at high prices isn't going to get it for them. I sell film on Amazon, both roll and sheet film. Roll film moves over 10x the volume of sheet film, if they need cash, then the thing to increase the price on is roll film, not sheet film, as it just...
...https://www.insideimaging.com.au/2019/exclusive-kodak-up-for-sale/ : "The trustees of KPP2 intend to hand over what’s left of the KodakAlaris group – after attempts to sell some or all of the various business units – to the UK Pension Protection Fund."
So better to squeeze as much money...
Ok, if you are that smart then for you it would be easy to guess that the Kodak/Fuji beyond x2 overpricing of LF products compared to roll film products it's about pricing policy, not related to ex-factory manufacturing cost, specially since ilford/Foma sell sheet film at similar price or less...
You can consider lucky, in the EU price is 275€, which is $307, and if you apply my country standard of living difference this is like if your price was $500, game over. Alaris...
