I just read a second announcement that it's KodakAlaris that's cutting colour 120 film prices to retailers by up to 35%, 'hoping the cuts will be passed on to consumers'.
This article/announcement did not deal with actual sales columns,IIRC
When KodakAlaris sold its photochemical division to sinopromise, Kodak's factory in China was also sold to sinopromise. Therefore, the predecessor of sinopromise's factory was the Kodak Chemicals China Factory, and the personnel, assets and equipment were all retained by sinopromise.
Eastman Kodak retained ownership of the rights all the way through the KodakAlaris and Sino Promise years - they just licensed them exclusively, and presumably agreed not to compete.
The problem with old vs. new HC-110 isn't one of licensing - it is difficulty of manufacture (of the old stuff)...
There are many films in that price bracket (around 15 EUR).
If Harman would compete with already perfect(ly boring) Fuji 200/Gold 200/ColorPlus 200 they would have to price Phoenix 200 below their cheapest Ilford BW film. How realistic do you think that is at the moment? I mean they would have...
...entity actually owns/owned the patents on Kodak photochemistry? Are such patents still in force, or have they expired? I believe it was KodakAlaris that sold the photochemicals division to Sino Promise. Does that necessarily mean that KodakAlaris owned the patents? And for that matter, was...
My local camera shop, which still struggles to obtain enough colour film from their supplier, knows nothing about this. So they are not among those getting any, I assume. I know them sufficiently well that I'm sure they wouldn't tell me any details, but would let me know they were in the know...
...think many of the 120 films are also on acetate base. Unless they have changed it without updating the technical data publications. And KodakAlaris, frustratingly, does not always put the base specification in the technical data publications. But they have started putting some of the 120...
Have you read the article linked in OP?
There you have a reseller (Nordfoto) that SilverGrain talked to and they have all the films (+ shortdated Ektar) that got discounted by Alaris for sale at discount prices (pretty much same discounts that were stated by Alaris' Andy Church).
...in Health and safety) it seems that Photo Systems was/is the source of the Legacy Pro L110. (which is what I have been using as B&H will ship that to Canada, But not Kodak Brand HC-110.)
Perhaps with the new license direct from Eastman Kodak, (NOT KodakAlaris) they can produce the Syrup...
...may have shared defective packaging, which may have been single sourced.
A lot of the change was motivated by the problems with Tetenal.
KodakAlaris was trying to centralize production to the USA, not least because that is where the largest retail market is for Kodak branded black and white...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't the case? The images of the bad Xtol in that thread say made in Germany, and images for the "Brown" Dektol also say Made in Germany.
...exit the business in early 2023
2. Photo Systems Inc. (U.S.), which had been manufacturing the chemicals for Sino Promise - and for KodakAlaris before the 2020 sale of that business to Sino Promise, has now secured the worldwide license from Eastman Kodak enabling them to both manufacture...
It may be notable that Color Plus, the "budget" C41 film...still experiences issues in supply not meeting demand. If "a new supplier" is able to offer a similar product, that could free up Kodak to concentrate more on gold, Ultramax and the pro films which will further stabilise supply and...
We must remember that it is Kodak-Alaris which actually sells to the bigger photographic dealers and to the distributors, who then sell to smaller shops. Everyone you and I buy Kodak still film from relies on whatever price K-A sets. If product availability and manufacturing costs have finally...
Who knows what's really going on? In this case, we have a guy at Alaris who doesn't really know what's going on at Eastman making claims. It;s true that greater demand usually causes prices to go up. But manufacturers also lower prices to increase demand. Do we really know how much Eastman...
...just need to believe that Eastman Kodak has Alaris squeezed on a 0,5% margin although that is backed by absolutely nothing (data or even common sense).
So, here we are, KodakAlaris earning nothing on Kodak film can drop their price by 35% and 120 film was flying off the shelves at those...
In general I agree that greater demand raises prices. However, it's possible that with greater demand, the price to manufacturer can go down substantially and those savings can be passed along. Kodak's prices are generally higher than their competitors. Surely, they're aware of that. If...
Agree. It wouldn't be wise for Harman to go to price war with Alaris. I think they have a pretty good idea of the current margins Alaris is bagging in. Imagine Alaris doing the same price cut for 135 Gold 200 that they did to 120. If Harman would then be aiming at offering even a modest 15%...
I have no reason to believe that Mr Church isn't a fine guy, but his position dictates what he'll say. I mean, would you expect him to say something like, "you'll pay through the nose suckers!"? 🙃
They definitely have no reason to let them know. A leak is possible, but not part of a plan.
If you haven't got much time, then lets focus on what I said instead of repeating what has been said hundreds of times before (when it was true).
1. I don't believe that supply/demand laws work differently for Alaris. Btw, this is thread about 120 film. There hasn't been a problem with...
Kodak got a lot of colour negative film into the warehouses 2-3 months ago, hence stocks are OK with retailers at the moment. Surely you're not denying that there have been consistent problems getting film, especially colour negative film, into the market for at least the last 6-7 years.
It's...
I've checked 3 major online stores in EU. Every Kodak 120 film (C-41, E-6, BW) is in stock except one film (Portra 160) in one store. It’s been like that for quite a while now.
But lets disregard that fact for a second. Andy Church tells you that Alaris can't keep up with demand and that is the...
Over on Instagram, Harman have stated it is not a resurrection of any previously discontinued product.
Kodak-Alaris have said that the price changes will be reflected when retailers have sold existing stock and restocked at the new prices.
If it is a colour film, price and quality as well as...
We know demand hasn't slackened. Kodak still can't keep up with demand. The brick and mortar shops in my area still cannot get Kodak C41 films in 135 or 120 in the quantities they want, as regularly as they want. And I'd be prepared to trust Andy Church, he's in a position to know how healthy...
Interesting possibility, but when are those gold 200 price cuts hitting the stores?
Just checked Macodirect and Fotoimpex and a brick of Gold 200 in 120 is 66 Euros. Sorry but no.
If it's really a colour film and Harman can do better than that price-wise I WILL fill my fridge with their stuff...
My suspicion is it is a Harman produced color negative film. It will be made by Harman and available in 35mm and 120. Directly competing with Kodak Gold and whatever the Fuji branded stuff is.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is connected with Alaris' decision to cut prices on Kodak Gold, to...
