No idea what the article is saying other than things are moving around at Kodak.

Why does this feel like the retirement situation once at Alaris?

Eastman Kodak temporarily paused all film production - to upgrade manufacturing plant (Nov 2024)

...And they manufacture and market the Estar base. Plus they manufacture some of the photo-chemistry for motion picture film processing. Kodak Alaris has the exclusive world-wide marketing and distribution rights for all Kodak branded still films. They don't manufacture any products. Other...

Who is the company that makes the film? Isn't it Kodak Alaris? Why are we talking about Eastman Kodak?

The current agreement between Kodak Alaris and Eastman Kodak permits Kodak to make the special runs of film that Cinestill uses - which itself is different from the film that is used by the movie industry. It lacks remjet from the start.

Eastman Kodak temporarily paused all film production - to upgrade manufacturing plant (Nov 2024)

I imagine they'll have to stop respooling. That seems to put them in competition with Alaris, which has a contract with Kodak to be the exclusive photo film distributor of Kodak film. Contact Cinestill. https://cinestillfilm.com/
  7. Eastman Kodak temporarily paused all film production - to upgrade manufacturing plant (Nov 2024)

...what we once called Kodak is now a convoluted arrangement of different naming rights and distribution channels for various products(i.e. Kodak Alaris, etc) but isn't Cinestill now in charge of the distribution of Kodak-branded chemistry at least in the US? If that's the case, it would...

Eastman Kodak temporarily paused all film production - to upgrade manufacturing plant (Nov 2024)

He used the word "modernizing". Companies don't modernize a factory if they don't think there's a future in film. Now whether the modernization is just for existing production, or if it includes expansion for more volume and other emulsions, is the open question. Expansion would be better...

Who is the master distributor for Kodak B&W Chemistry in Canada? (Like Amplis is for Ilford)

Thanks Matt, if I assume the stores that sell film and Black and White Chemistry limits the number of retail outlets, any distributor names you might know of that would supply those types of outlets? ie Who supplies Henry's (nationwide), Downtown Camera (Toronto), the Camera Store (Calgary)...

Who is the master distributor for Kodak B&W Chemistry in Canada? (Like Amplis is for Ilford)

There isn't one - that is not the distribution model used. Kodak Alaris sells to more local distributors, who tend to specialize in retail markets, rather than products. So "amateur" film may be purchased by your retail source from a distributor who specializes in selling to drugstores, or from...

Kodak no longer selling E100D directly to customers?

The bankruptcy agreement between Eastman and Alaris allows Eastman to distribute movie film only. It's only to be sold to movie companies not for the purpose of cutting them up to be used as still photos. All Kodak still films like Ektachrome or Tmax are to be distributed by Alaris only. It...

There's quite likely a political/policy dimension to this story that we generally ignore/overlook. Sino Promise is/was based in Hong Kong. I think you have to take into account administrative and political changes in Hong Kong to make sense of the Sino Promise situation. Consider also that...

The old sleepy English management appears to have been risk averse and not very creative probably because their shareholders, the British pensioners, were only interested in getting their monthly retirement checks. Now it;s owned by real business investors with across the board experience who...

When Alaris was set it is was OWNED by the Kodak Limited pension fund, but RUN by the folks who had been doing the same job for Eastman Kodak and it's related companies Before the Bankruptcy. one assumes the fund itself was set up with Professional Paid management.

It's been recently purchased so I expect the new owners to upgrade marketing. The old owners were only interested in their pension checks.

+1. Your last point: improved service. Yepp, in that regard Kodak Alaris is totally underperforming, to say it diplomatically: For example Harman technology, with much much less workforce and employees than Alaris, is offering - two excellent websites with lots of information which are often...

Kodak no longer selling E100D directly to customers?

The availability problem was because of Covid, and because of too low 135 format confectioning capacities at Kodak. Both problems have been solved for quite a while. Has KA reacted with price decreases? No. And I prefer to not being ripped off. I have to pay for Gold 200 more than 100% more...

And before, when the price was not a problem, problem was the availability. It’s economy 101. Kodak Alaris is maximising their profits with the supply they can get. I still prefer expensive film to no film available. It’s not really KA or EK fault that the only other major supplier of colour...

So why did they invest $100-200 million if they have little prospects or avenues to increase the value of the company? If high prices for Kodak film is reducing sales as FLic Flam says, how will Alaris raise prices further and not expect to reduce market share even more? All your arguments are...

...so many other companies which failed and got into bankrupcy: You will find these MBA managers in about all these cases. And the current Kodak Alaris managers have certainly also a similar or same educational background. We don't have a problem with availability of Kodak film. The problem is...

Maybe Hollywood Cine film will be made available in single rolls through Alaris so you don;t need to roll your own. Other film might be made in formats not currently furnished. Keep in mind that bypassing manufacturers by rolling your own to save a few bucks lowers their sales and...

Kodak no longer selling E100D directly to customers?

It is a very reasonable assessment. And with the new owners of Kodak Alaris the last three points will probably become more important. Alaris now will certainly make more pressure on Eastman Kodak to minimise sales of movie film to respooling companies which then sell these films as 135 photo...

I have not talked about that, Alan. Please read my post. I have talked about the fact that huge international online film distributors who are selling ten-thousands of Kodak films p.a. are not allowed to buy directly at KA. But have to buy at wholesalers. Best regards, Henning

...business to hire all those sub-distribution employees. On the other hand, the smaller distributors handling Kodak delivery to the stores also handle other film manufacturers and equipment as well. They're not just distributing Kodak Alaris film. It's only a small part of their sales inventory.

Of course, since that is something that was the base of KA - EK agreement from the start. EK handles all cine film by themselves. The 35mm 100D embargo has nothing to do with EK not wanting to deal with small customers. We will see if Alaris will also have the power to "persuade" EK to stop...

The new owners of Alaris were certainly aware of all the legal agreements between the two parties before they bought Alaris. They had to feel secure enough otherwise they would not have bought Alaris. The elimination of Eastman selling E100D directly I'll bet was instigated by the new Alaris...

Yes, works fine. I always do it that way. I think the latter, yeah. Never played with it, but I routinely do ECN2 development at home and shoot a lot of Vision3 250D these days. Works great. I skip the prebath for remjet removal and instead remove it at the end of processing. I make a...
