Do it! The stock holders are c**p. While set up of the betterscanning holder is a bit fiddly the results are worth it. Watch the dust with the ANR glass, though.
...ANG at the same time, so I can't comment on the worth of the ANG. But my scans with the stock V700 MF holder were terrible; with the Betterscanning holder and ANG glass they are sharp corner to corner. Setting up the carrier is a bit fiddly because of adjusting the height screws, but worth...
...upgraded to the V700 to do sheet film, and I don't need this scanner anymore.
Included are the original film holders, plus the betterscanning Medium format holder with the anti-Newton ring glass. Also, I have the 35mm sized ANR glass from betterscanning that I use with the OEM holders...
Before this thread gets shot down in flames for talking about scanning, I'll just say to get the V750.
Or even if you get a lesser model, get a Betterscanning vari-height wet-mount and learn how to calibrate and use it, results are sooo much better than stock epson holders...
*ducks for cover*
I scan MF with a V700 and a betterscanning holder. IMO the betterscanning holder is worth the money. It's not just the holder, but a procedure to follow to ensure proper focus and optimum resolution. I think I can produce files from 645 plenty good enough for a 16x20 print.
Short write-up...
...instances, it pays to tape them to a piece of ANR glass. You do need to keep the glass very clean and dust-free though.
I always use betterscanning.com glass on the rare occasions I scan 35mm with the Epson. I also have a custom-cut piece for the OEM 120 holder. (I don't know if the...
For the most part, what I meant was that I use 3200 on 120 scans, but only 2400 on 35mm scans because with 120 I use the betterscanning holders, which are significantly more precise about keeping the film flat as well as at the proper height, when dialed in I can get 3200 usually.
There's also...
Lightly used Epson V700 with all of the holders (slide, 35mm, MF, 4x5, 8x10 guide), manual, FW cable.
ANR glass adjustable wet mount holder.
Booklet of acetate sheets plus fluid mount roller.
Everything you need to start wet scanning.

...For a lot of MF shooters eyeing up the Plustek, the main question is, does it offer anything significant over its much cheaper rival? Reassessing the Epson's true abilities (in conjunction with the betterscanning holders) is therefore relevant in examining the Plustek's value proposition, IMO.
The betterscanning holders require a dedicated "dial-in" effort to ensure that the mounted film is in the plane of sharpest focus. It took me an afternoon of repeated scans to get it right.
Once that is done, getting the highest quality scans still requires understanding the craft of...
I just added my location. StoneNYC, just to be sure you have the betterscanning holders. From all the test I have done, I don't believe I have encountered any resolution related issues caused by the use of software. Issues with colors, contrast and proper ICE perhaps but never resolution. I...
...be optimal - there's just no way of knowing for sure because the adjustments are far too coarse. What I will say is that, for me, the betterscanning holders were a huge leap in resolution over the OEM holders set to their best position. The difference was not small. That is why I don't feel...
Probably because I didn't quote artobest's response stating, "@Les, I'd like to see your results using the betterscanning holder. The OEM holder is irrelevant, IMO. It just doesn't deliver what the machine is capable of." as he is the one who stated - and now you too, that Epson's holders are...
Your question doesn't make sense? You mean more people are using the OEM holders than the betterscanning ones?
I think they are irrelevant because they are useless and don't produce an even enough film plane to even bother using them, in particular 120, or even slightly curly 35mm, but the 4x5...
@Les, I'd like to see your results using the betterscanning holder. The OEM holder is irrelevant, IMO. It just doesn't deliver what the machine is capable of.
I was only half kidding about the iPhone images, however it should be understood that the new iPhone 5s camera and the lens elements that are contained within it are actually really really high-quality and precision made. Just very small.
Based on how variable the lenses in the scanners are...
According to my res testing of the Epson V7XX - using Fuji Velvia, test target, optimal setup and conditions, standard holder, the V7xx manages to achieve more detail at 6400dpi setting.
6400dpi - 6 vert, 5.5 horz
4800dpi - 5.5 vert, 5.5 horz
3200dpi - 4.5 vert, 5 horz
2400dpi - 3.8 vert...
...you that the Epson v750 (which I also use) maxes out optically at about 3200 ppi. I have worked hard to dial mine in focus-wise with a betterscanning holder, and I also wet mount (I don't see a huge difference with wet mounting, but it does have subtle improvement).
Regarding density - no...
...of Newton rings (yes, I put them emulsion down, but I had a film that caused NR even though). BS holders seemed too expensive when calculated with shipping and VAT, so I made EvenBetterScanning ;) holder designed for undermounting. Total cost about 15 Euro. One can use it for strip films as well.
...My print should have arrived by now, I shipped it priority mail.
The scan itself wasn't the best, I hadn't yet calibrated the betterscanning holders and the scan is SLIGHTLY out if focus, but slight and you have to get close to the treeline with your eye to tell. It's just not worth the...
...that holds film is missing but you can still scan with the other side. I took one cover out because I was using an ANR glass from betterscanning and I thought I left it somewhere safe but no idea where it went. You can get a new one from ebay for $25

Get the betterscanning holders AND the ANR glass. If you weren't able to calibrate them the same with the glass, then you're doing something wrong OR you got a bad copy of the scanner (my first one has so much out gassing it was like a cloud on the glass and had to send it back).
Any old film...
If you are satisfied, no problem, but the Epson holders don't hold the film very flat, so images are not sharp edge-to-edge. This is true for the hefty Nikon 9000 holders, too. When I switched to using glass, sharpness improved dramatically -- no more soft edges.
Manufacturers insist on shipping...
I've not been able to try the betterscanning holders, but I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the Epson holders for 120. I've got prints up to 12"x16" from them without any apparent sharpness issues. The 35mm holders are pretty good too. Flimsy yes, but you just have to take your time with...
well after a day of calibrating the height of the betterscanning holder I found the optimum position, then did a side by side comparison with the old Epson holder. alas they looked identical, even at 100%. I suppose the betterscanning holders will be better for curled film though, and will...
...and probably lost if the resulting scan is downsized. On the other hand, I've found wet mounting to be a pretty fast process using betterscanning holders once you get the hang of it, and it deals with flatness very nicely, even with very curled roll film. I don't do it with all scans, but...
