Ilford Multigrade vs. Ilford PQ Universal paper developers

...there were complaints about shifts in image colour abnd variations in warmth, so they added Benzotriazole to control this the new formula was ID-62. These where powder developers. PQ Universal is a liquid concentrate, the Sodium carbonate is replaced by Potassium carbonate and Sodium or...

I MADE A DEVELOPER TODAY, YES A NEW ONE!

Looks like you're re-inventing Ilford's ID-62 developer which is the basis of most of Ilford's commercial paper developers. This is a concentrated version, however I replace the Sodium Carbonate with Potassium carbonate & Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide as it keeps longer without any...

    Reverse engineering a developer?

Bromophen is very similar to ID-62, and I posted a link. The difference is that the packaged powder form has a small amount of Sodium Metabisulphite in Part A which helps preserve the developing agents in the packet, Kodak do the same with Microdol-X, but it's not required if made up as a...

That makes sense, 62 g (anhydrous) and 72 g (monohydrate) are equivalent. I prefer the monohydrate as it is more stable. Given time, anhydrous will be monohydrate anyway.

Look at ID-20, ID-62 & ID-78 :D ID-20 was sold as a PQ version early 60's but there were image colour problems so it was re-formulated as ID-62, take away the Benzotriazole & put back the Bromide & warm tone ID-78. Ian

Probably, it's possibly not that different, Ilford used to recommend ID-62. Multigrade dev is balanced to give the same image colour regardless of Grade. Ian

The ID-62 developer with reduced Potassium Bromide and the addition of Benzotriazole in 20, + 10, + 20, + 30, + 20ml increments produced similar results...

...The level of Hydroxide is Image colour/tone is related to grain size, it would be interesting to see what effect dropping the Sulphite level might have in a formula like ID-62 along with the increase in Benzotriazole. In addition switching from Phenidone to Metol which is colder working. Ian

You've probably rather over done the Benzotriazole, essentially you've gone towards ID-62/ID-20 it should be quite cold. Ilford Cooltone dev used a proprietary agent instead of Benzotriazole. Ian

I've been making up concentrated ID-78 for over 20 years now and never had a problem. You can replace the Sodium Carbonate with Potassium Carbonate & Potassium or Sodium Hydroxide which allows far greater solubility. Assume Potassium Carbonate (anhyd) 12 g + Potassium Hydroxide 4 g is approx...

I just ordered some liquid Dektol...

Liquid Dektol is a Dimezone/Hydroquinone liquid version of D72, it's probably like PQ Uninversal or ID-62 which is the PQ version of theprevious MQ developer ID-20. It may have a different name in the US. Often the Sodium carbonate is replaced by Potassium Carbonate & Sodium or Potassium...

PQ Universal vs Harman Warmtone developer??

ID-72 is the PQ variant of ID19/D19b and is probably more contrasty than PQ universal. ID-62 is closer, with no Benzotriazole & additional bromide it become ID-78 which is very similar to Neutol WA. Ian

Homebrew alternative to Ilford MG Developer

Agfa Ansco 103 is very close to ID-20, ID-62 is the PQ variant of ID-20. Modern commercial liquid developers such as Multigrade, Neutol NE & WA etc are usually PQ devs (or more commonly Dimezone instead of Phenidone) and the alkali is changed, so instead of Sodium Carbonate they use a balance...

What about ID-62, it's fairly similar to Multigrade dev. Leave out the Benzotriazole and add more Bromide it becomes ID-78 a Warm tone developer, or add more Benzotriazole and it will become much Cooler. ID-3 is a good alternative to Selectol Soft/Agfa Adaptol. Ian
