I think everyone has supplied pretty good answers. Which lens is going to be the caveat. I have a Rodenstock 75mm (can't remember which model), but it folds up inside a crown Graphic.

A couple of you have me wondering if it's worth potential damage to figure out how to leave a lens "safely" attached to a Chamonix 45N1

The Crown Graphic was my first 4x5 in 2003. Now I shoot with a Toyo 45A or a Burke & James [combo 5x7+ 4x5 back]... but I still have that Crown Graphic. For me it's the "Timex of field cameras"...takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin' It's got to be over 50 yrs old and does the job.

If the camera has a graflock back, you can remove the GG frame and glass easily. Then focld the camera with the lens mounted, and see if it is too far to the rear for safety.

On some wooden cameras, you can remove the rear plate w/GG, and fiod and see how far thens is sticking out. Check how much you have on the plate for clearance.

Wista SP with a 150mm G-claron in Copal 0 shutter folds just fine. That's a tiny lens.

Regarding the Chamonix, the wrinkle is that the front standard is not attached to the bed when folded so it can wiggle around a bit.
Good point about removing ground glass frames.
