Through some trial and error/frustration in order to take a shot and advance each frame I have to physically click the MR dial over to the R (revolving back) position briefly. Then everything works. Without doing this everything locks up and nothing advances and can't take a shot. Wondering if anyone as any thoughts on this gremlin. Thanks

I don't know, from personal experience, what to tell you. But I do know who almost certainly can: Bill Rogers at Mamiya Repair. He is the acknowledged guru of servicing that brand, and could probably (and would likely be willing to) tell you what the problem was right away, and whether it's something you can remedy or if it would need a service.

You can see some of his work, and also contact him, via his Instagram page, which is quite interesting.

Thankyou for the info. That is very helpful.

Mine is gremlin free, currently. Have you tried a fresh battery? I bought a fancy battery tester from B&H, it load tests the battery, like the service stations used to do on automobile batteries. The only way to be certain.
Lithium, preferably made in Japan, Germany, USA.

Thankyou mshchem, the battery is fine. I did contact Bill Rogers at Mamiya Repair. Good to know there are folks working on these cameras. He wasn't familiar with my problem in his experience so I will just live with it. I can still get the camera to fire and use it, but just a strange work around.

The RZ has a number of interlocks to stop idiots like me screwing things up.

Many of those interlocks rely on lubrication not drying up and stopping the locks moving smoothly.

If you are of a mind to, there are a number of Youtube videos showing the partial dismantling of the RZ and how to clean up old lube and replace it.
