Hi, I'm Sonora

I'm mostly here to read up on alternative processes and generally lurk the forums. I like doing anything that seems like an interesting way to arrive at a finished image, and find generally the more I do hands-on, the more I enjoy the process — I'm doing photography largely for fun and to document my life.

My most used cameras are 35mm rangefinders, of which I find the Olympus XA and Leica M3 to be my favourites (each for their own reasons), but I also have a 6x6 camera of a Certain Swedish Make, as well as a small menagerie of other photographic tools (mostly in small sizes). I'll confess in my 4 years of being more serious about photography I've never actually owned a Proper digital camera, and am curious what they are like... perhaps someday I will have to try one, but not right now.

I hope to get along with everyone, and, of course, read up on some juicy, niche photography processes...

Welcome! Alt. processes are (for me at least) one of the most fascinating things on photography! Niche processes are some of the most fascinating and most annoying to work on but it comes with the territory, just try not to blow anything up, and think twice before using ferric chloride (once someone said: "[FeCl3] the filthiest chemical you can have on you darkroom"), learned it the hard way while trying the Pellet's Process... 🙃

Thanks for the tips!
I've only interacted with ferric chloride once or twice (in art classes and maybe chemistry), but I'll definitely keep it in the back of my mind. I'm definitely one to keep by the book in terms of safety and cleanup.

First is probably going to be just uber baby steps, stuff like caffenol and other homemade developers that I've been curious about...

Caffenol is pretty fun, although for me it was never really a thing. I like Parodinal (Just like rodinal but made with paracetamaol (ben-u-ron) tablets, drain cleaner, and wine preservative) it's much cheaper, lasts forever, and is a daily use developer (if you want my formula, I can post it here). There is also a version of cafenol that adds a type of hair dye (that has PPD) and you can develop color films. Take a look at the site of a compatrot of mine that is true master of alt. developers: https://caffenolcolor.blogspot.com/

Wow, my mind is blown. Rodinal is my go-to for its shelf life, so that Parodinal looks enticing. I'll jot that colour caffenol down on the list as well...
