Looking for a nice tripod to keep my Calumet C1 on. Happy to do some driving (the closest one I can find is 140 miles away!)

If you have other suggestions on affordable sturdy tripods for cameras of that scale let me know!

Hello,
I recommend a Gitzo G410/ 411 Tripod
Note: G410 same as G411 without the rapid column
Weight with rapid column G525 added: 10.02 lbs.
Weight with legs only ........................... 8.40 lbs.

Paired with a G1570M Gitzo Low Profile Head
Or a Majestic geared head.

This works on my Seneca 8 x 10 weighing in at 12 lbs with Lens.

Good luck with your search.

Yeah the G1570M comes up regularly as folks head of choice for these heavy cameras. Of course what I’m trying to do is avoid /paying/ for the G1570M šŸ˜†

Given that I don’t plan to carry the C1 in the field the Majestic seems like it would save me a lot of money for not a lot lost in capabilities. Even if I had to drive 140 miles!

Glazers, kenmore camera, and Omega photo all have a decent rotating selection of tripods used. Yes, I do have a Bogen/Manfroto 410 junior geared head for sale.
I also have a Slik sh-909 head while not geared, it's rated for a lot of weight and seems to have doubled in price since I bought mine.

The real bummer for me is missing out on that Gitzo 1370M, the others unfortunately don’t have a sufficient rating for the camera 😳

Is your C1 the old magnesium one or a later aluminum? it looks like this would mean approx. 14 lbs. or approx. 18lbs camera only.

Are you looking for a head that has double your camera weight capacity?

Glazers had some legs with a Majestic on them the last 2 times I was in there. I would call the photographic record of their used items spotty at best.

It’s the magnesium casting, with a large lens. It’s pretty heavy but not that bad, and being able to shift the mounting plate means that even at extension you can balance it well.

As of yesterday I have it on a set of Bogen 3051 legs and 3047 head. The legs seem plenty stable, but the head has a slight wiggle (and the QR plate it came with sucks!).

I am hoping for a tripod with double the weight limit of the camera (because who wants more tripods?!). I’ll try giving glazers a call though :smile:

I have a Majestic aluminum model which I bought new in 1965. It has the sidearm but it is missing the elevator hand crank knob. It is in Anacortes, less than 140 miles.

Unfortunately, I'm up in White Rock BC, and I probably won't be going down until February 16 or within a week or so following. We are preparing the house there for sale, having moved up across the line. I would like to sell it, having already sold my 8x10.

Somewhere, I know I have a spare hand crank part, but it hasn't turned up.

Larry! I think I have your JOBO :smile:

I’ll DM.

I have one I would sell, but Taos is a long way from Seattle.

Still, they really are great. Avedon used one while shooting "The American West" in 8x10.

Hi!
If you’re interested I have a massive quickset tripod with a beautiful geared head I don’t use anymore- I’m down in Oly- This thing is comically huge so it’s more of a studio rig, but I’d be happy to let it go cheap just to free up garage space! I can try to post a pic if you’re interested or just pm me and I’ll send some.

Comically huge sounds about right! I’ll DM

There's the Leofoto LS-324C X version (here: https://leofotousa.com/products/leofoto-ls-324cx-ranger-series-tripod) with a weight limit of 33lbs.

Free shipping over $29usd, & they send out discount codes here & there (10% to 20%, you can use ShutterMuse20 for 20% off)

I've looked at that exact model in a shop out here that had a used one (It did not look used). The specs on paper sound good, but the last (smallest) leg section is really small, and being a 4-section adds some "wiggle" vs. a 3-section. I personally vetoed it as an 8x10 capable tripod, and my setup is a bit lighter than the OP. YMMV

I went and picked up @KinoGrafx’s comically large tripod today.

Y’all… I was not prepared. Thank you @KinoGrafx! The camera is solid as a rock on this absolute behemoth.

Haha! Great to meet you today! I’m glad TripodZilla has a new home! And I’m sorry about your back in advance šŸ˜

I'm just trying to imagine the look on my wife's face if I walked in the door with that tripod!

I showed this thread to my wife. Her responses were:
1) she agrees with Mollie - she would have said much the same;
2) she thinks the combination of your camera and the tripod is beautiful;
3) she thinks you got a great deal :smile:;
4) she reminded me of our adventures that one snowy evening a few years ago when we went to pick up my old, extended column D6 enlarger. That included driving a fair distance with the top of the column right near her left ear!

Now that’s a tripod!!! The C1 looks great on it, certainly nice to have a good solid setup.
