It looks like a diffraction pattern … but I would expect it’s due to internal reflections. If the filament size is bigger, the pattern also disappears. The Varipoint projects a pin head sized light source from the Pulamp bulb.
Here's ns a picture of the projection on the base board without negative. I suspect internal reflections gives the rings and centered hot spot. With the T marked condensers, the illumination is even. This is the Varipoint 1200. 138 may be differnt-
I learned this the hard way ... the Durst Varipoint Enlarger fitted with a point light source, will need T coated condensers and T coated glass in the negative carrier. It will not work properly using the regular AN glass and Femacon condensers. These condensers are made for the more common opal...
So far, the only one I’ve found useful and informative is Hans Namuth’s description of using a point light source enlarger. You can find it in Darkroom 2, Jain Kelly, Lustrum Press 1978.

ProPallette 8000s seem to be quite sturdy. I have two, and they still work. As so do the MacBook G4 Lombard. That’s the one to get. It has native scsi. I fire them up once a year, when someone asked for digital slides or negatives. I can’t really see the difference bt. 4K and 8K though. If I...
I have a setup like this. Negative flatness can be a problem - and just the over all film handling. Flash is great, but too strong, so you have to get ND filters. I have a stack under the diffuser. Worked ok for a job of 2000 framed kodachromes. But again - a good drum scan is more my taste. All...
Thanks everyone. The reason for the point light setup is a series of negatives i shot, pre-flashed low density and low contrast 4x5” night shots.
Ordered a bunch of books recommended on this forum about the point light setup.
I also recall some good info on durst-pro website. I ordered some...
My varipoint has been sitting on my bench for years now, without being used. Not is the time for me to give it a go, but all the good information on point light source enlargers has disappeared with the end of durst-pro-usa. Does anyone happen to have saved these PDFs? If someone has a users...
