I finally saw one of those in the plastic at a camera show a few weeks ago. For years (decades?) I've been reading that they're not "real Nikons" since they're made by Cosina. But I couldn't find anything wrong with it. It's spec'd about like a Nikon from 1980, but that's all most of us need...
Nikon N80, AF Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 D, Ilford Delta 400
^ This is one of my favorite street combos. I had only a few seconds to prepare for this moment; if I had to set exposure or focus manually, I likely would have missed it.
I saw a Zuiko shift lens sell on ebay a few weeks ago for $150. I 'Watched' it to think about it, but when I went back a few hours later, it was gone already. Damn.

That looks like a good book. (Amazon has a nice chunk of it for preview)

Here's the book I was talking about. I found a used copy on Amazon some months back:

I see there's a newer version out now...
I picked up an Olympus 35 RC at the camera show yesterday for $75. All seems well with it. I shot a test roll yesterday. Need to check that the battery isn't starting to leak and also confirm accuracy of the auto exposure.
I have a Yashica Electro 35 GS, which has the faster lens and better...
No experience with the 35/2.8. I looked into getting one for the reasons you describe, but they are pretty dear, relative to a 28/3.5. (which I have already) What I wound up doing instead was to buy a second inexpensive body. I keep the 28/3.5 on one body (OM1N) and either the 50/1.8 or 135/3.5...
I think he was referring to the mirror damper foam, thinking that was the 'air damper'.
The OM1N shutter is very smooth and quiet. The mirror slap was good for its day, but not quite on par with something like a Nikon FE2 with a counterbalanced mirror. My Nikon N80 has even less of a perceived...
I bought a book on this topic. It doesn't TOTALLY preclude gear discussion, but it is definitely not the focus. I realized that my gear is as good as it needs to be to make the best images in the world. What's missing is SEEING things differently and looking differently. I'll come back with the...
Re. the earlier discussion on whether stealth is needed for street photography, Cartier-Bresson believed it was.
"Cartier-Bresson almost always used a Leica 35 mm rangefinder camera fitted with a normal 50 mm lens, or occasionally a wide-angle lens for landscapes.[35] He often wrapped black...
