Agree ground glass essential for longer lenses. I also like the ground glass for composition even with the wider lenses. They are really good focusing close as well. Another aid for focus is a lazer tape measure.

It is a wonderful camera for landscapes with wide angle lenses JD. Most people are using it with a digital back and its not so easy to get a film back. Its great with film. For longer lenses precise focusing really needs the ground glass screen. You cant go wrong with the Silvestri either!

Not all Soviet era rangefinders are equal. The Kiev factory actually acquired Zeiss equipment and personel. The early cameras are very comlarable to a Contax ii and the lenses are zeiss designs. Early 1950s Kiev is super to use and doesnt get in the way. Fall off in quality with time. Fed not...

Its mainly the Kiev optics which are good and very reasonably priced. Not so sure about Fed.

Kiev is an interesting one to mention. The early 1950s versions are very high quality and the lenses are excellent. A lot of these were made by ex Carl Zeiss staff. If you can find a good one! The shutter is quite complicated and not something i would want to rely on. One thing to mention...
