Is film good in contrasty light?

I'd say the learning curve appears a bit daunting for sure. I did some reading about zone system, how to develop film and tweak development time to control contrast etc. The underlying principles are quite similar to what's going on in digital via photoshop so its not so difficult to understand...

Is film good in contrasty light?

So many great responses here. I don't fully understand all the techniques discussed here since I've never done any development myself but I'm noting down all the ideas to experiment with down the road. Thanks all! Correct. I'm not necessarily trying to compress the entire dynamic range as long...

It works though. I frequently use reflectors when working with small subjects outdoors like flowers and such.

That's encouraging to hear. I'm always open to trying new techniques so I appreciate all the ideas.

Is film good in contrasty light?

I was not sure if its ok to post pics. This is one of the examples I gave up on. This is pretty much straight from the camera so its quite dark. What I don't like about this one is that the transitions from light to dark are too extreme to recover in post (see crop)

Interesting! The methods you describe do sound quite similar to what I'm doing digitally. My hope was that film would be easier to work with (even if it has the same issues to deal with). I guess I'll just have to try it to find out :)

Is film good in contrasty light?

All good. I am familiar with Ansel Adams but I had not read how he did it. But yes it will be a bit too much for me to jump into right away. I think at most initially I can bracket shots and try to simulate over/under development digitally while scanning … not sure if that’s a good proxy

Is film good in contrasty light?

Makes sense. I framed the question in a more technical way but I guess what I'm really optimizing for is to get a look that works for me. I'll keep the timeframe in mind. I wonder also about the problem with the digital files, unless you are using jpgs and bypassing camera RAW. Thanks! Sounds...

Is film good in contrasty light?

Got it End-use is whatever I can sell. Otherwise it will just be a digital scan on a website mostly. The harshness of the light is not pleasing to my eyes. Usually the light filtering through leaves tend to get blown out so I bracket and try to blend images in photoshop, sometimes it works but...

Is film good in contrasty light?

I'm a landscape photographer doing a lot of work in woodlands. Currently I shoot with a medium format Hasselblad (digital). I've been contemplating reshooting some of my images in analog to see if I can improve on the look. Specifically there are some that I (intentionally) want to shoot in...
