Is it continuous thread like a nut & bolt? most RF's are. Since there's only one start point everything should be good.
If you want use a ground glass or frosted tape at the film plane to check fpcus.
Removing the base board and lamp housing won't hurt anything but makes it much easier to handle. Remove the lamp housing and raise the carriage to reduce the tension on the spring.
How is the glass removed from the housing? I've had the housing off of the camera and it wasn't obvious to me. On my Mll the RF still works but the VF image doesn't. I'll dig it out
& take another look, it's been several years.

If you're working on an M camera you can check focus with a ground glass. I'LL claim too many years and too few Summicrons to be of any help(?) beyond that.
Not having any self-control though I believe it's more likely to have had a shim installed if it was needed from the factory.
Most zooms use nylon rollers over a shoulder screw. IF a roller is cracked or broken a lens can appear loose but if you don't have experience and/or parts on hand, Don't mess with it.
^^^^^^^^^^^ Sure enough are, by golly.
Canon and Voightlander made some \, Olympus made only one..........40mm f2.8 pretty uncommon beyond that there were a couple of less regarded makers
can you grasp the 1st curtain and move it back into the film aperture and IF you can move it,
will it then snap back to the jammed position?
You had the mirror box out of the camera. An SLR uses the mirror to release the first curtain
and it could be a lever that's not engaging or the curtain...
If it's not outside, where oh where could it be? Sorry if that seems to be a smartass comment
but it could be internal haze. The small spots may be fungus. Or not.
If you're the adventurous type try removing the front element and see if cleans off with
typical lens cleaner and tissues.

Is there something like a logo in the center of the knob? Many cameras will have something similar to hide screws/ If there is it can be loosened with some alcohol on it. SAometimes a gentle prying with a sewing needle can help.
The Nikon Pistol grip had/has a threaded cable release. but the camera end had the old
Nikon/Yashica female fitting. Not to worry though, Nikon made an adapter from that to a
standard release*.
*not to say it's hard to find but I've seen oneš in over forty years
I was told not to wet* suede because it gets(?) water marks.
2nd hand (hearsay) from someone that wore a suede jacket & was paranoid about it.
Dunno how I got bold print & then pressed another mystery key & it went away.
