this exactly explains why I’m interested in getting an Fstop timer. Once you have a base exposure you can always calculate on your own but those timers seem like they make life easier.
Well I'm glad there is not a consensus here on split grade and sorry for the late response (Oasis concert out of town). I definitely would not call myself unexperienced with darkroom printing but I am no pro - just always did the traditional method and by feel / test strips (no meters) and I...
I too usually change my mind about a print over a couple days too. Thanks Matt. It's super interesting to hear all the opinions. I think I just asked bunch of chefs how to cook a chicken (and then apply that to steak), so I get it.
Thanks all for your views on this. Exactly the discussion, tips, and sources I was looking for, all of the opinions above were valuable. I didn't mean to imply that economics was a limiting factor, only it would be nice to save paper. I did get a little sticker shock when I put some boxes of...
Let's say I wanted to go from a Ilford 8X10 RC final print to a larger fiber Print (still Ilford) and I made the RC print using split grade filtering. What is/would be your preferred workflow? Would you use an F-stop timer with an attached light meter like the one from Darkroom Automation? Paper...
I would love to see some examples. how does old Ilford multigrade IV fiber do with this process? I have an old unopened box of 20x24 that I have no idea what condition it is in.
@Guillaume Zuili loving your work on your website!
It depends on how the final output is used, and then, the real issue comes down to veracity. For journalistic work even adding vignette and burning shadows is considered unethical at this point, because it changes the mood of the event. For fine art or commercial - it really doesn't matter to...
Keep it up @Light Lens Lab ! Your Elcan is my every day carry lens. Hope your film makes it out to USA. 🖖
Attached are some of my LLL 50mm Elcan shots with FP4, PyrocatHD 4+3+900 1 hour EMA. Thanks for bringing back this lens! Can you make a 28mm viewfinder soon? Sorry tangent...Film looks...
I absolutely love it. Takes a couple goes to get the timing and temps just right. I decant Kodak C-41 ABC chems into seperate tiny bottles that will mix up a perfect 500ml and I do three good rolls with the AGO, I add 15 seconds and reuse these chems again on expired film or push another 3 rolls...
I've been dead set on PyrocatHD for the last two years, and have yet to try xtol for 35mm. I do love the wacky acutance glow for my current work with Pyrocat. Is Xtol/Mytol that much better (grain and tonality)?
Also here is a negative half developed in 510Pyro and half developed in Pyrocat...
Here is a recent shot of HP5 @1600 that I semi-stand (EMA) developed with A5.5+B4.5+W900 Pyrocat HD for 60 mins. And I didn't love the results of the roll. I agree Delta 3200 is the way to go. I still haven't tried DD-X, but I am going to start experimenting with pushing Double XX with DD-X...
