A monument to a Bavarian regiment on the Strudelköpfl mountain. The peaks on the horizon are in Austria. The monument is in what is now Italy but before 1919 this was also Austria.
Thank you. As it is a war memorial to a brutal Alpine campaign I wanted to capture that somehow. I didn't want it to look too pretty even though the scenery is delightful.
The final production has a ominous or foreboding feel to the scene......nicely done. The only change for me is to bring the white gamma down just slightly, seems a bit bright.
Thank you. Actually, the monument is white and in very bright sunlight. I don't understand what any of the scanner settings mean so as yet I have never had the courage to alter any of them.
I tried grade 2 to start with but grade 3 seemed to give the picture more "bite". In fact, it would be tricky to print this as a benign scene without a rather heavily exposed sky. The monument is so bright compared to the rest of the scene that it would have to have been heavily burnt in whilst masking most of the rest of the picture. My test prints could achieve a normally exposed scene but with the monument very weak so the whole lot got more exposure. Fortunately this worked because I find dodging and burning difficult (although I can do simple stuff).
