I see exactly what you were stating artistically with this compositon.... nice concept... What severely detracts from it, for me, is the tree and the fence... I believe that if you had somehow omitted those elements, the power of the shapes of the rocks and the contrast between highlights on the rocks and the low values in the grass would habe been so much more evident. I see that you shot at f22... so, I will attribute the softness in the background to the scanning process??? I really like this kind of photography, and I hope that you display more of your work in this style.
Than you both for your comments. This is the only viewpoint that makes sense for the arraingement of the stones. On either side of the stones is a blank field, too boring, and empty. The camera was resting above the foreground stone and I used a 90mm SA lens with front tilt to get the DOF. This image was scanned from a 35mm slide of the 11x14 print and my scanning was not the best at that time.
I disagree with the first two posts. The tree and fence offer contrasting linear values which serve as a segue from the free form values in the stones to the horizontal value in the ribbon of road. The tree and fence offer up a vertical anchorment which gives the image scope and breaks up 3-dimensional space effectively. Good show! You have a knack for composing that is very refreshing here.
