Winter Quarters at Pamplin Park in Petersburg, Virginia. During the siege of Petersburg (US Civil War), soldiers often constructed their own quarters, partially sunk into the earth, and covered with a tent fly. Photo was taken in March of 1998. This print was made in April, 1998 on 8” x 10” paper.

One of those shots that provokes contemplative thought: how did people get by without modern conveniences? They did, of course, get by, but again a picture like this one leads to the conclusion that it can't have been much fun.
 
These canvas tents are pretty comfortable in the summer, and can be cozy in the winter if you have a wood stove or fireplace. The canvas actually never leaks (as long as there are no holes). I have spent many a weekend in them, and find them more comfortable (but less portable) than modern tents. Thanks for your comments-
