I made several attempts last winter to photograph a similar scene of the woods behind my house, but none was as successful as this is. Excellent! That said, if you could achieve a high enough vantage point, or wait until later in the day, keeping the light value of the sky out of it would be a good thing to consider as well.
This is a very nice image Collin. Your isolation of the 'laticework' has enough detail to make it a very engaging abstract image imo. The details appear to have been contained in the snow and shadows very nicely, something that must have taken a fair bit of control. This is what would lift the print to being excellent (imo). I agree with John that the lighter sky (just in the center top) is perhaps a little distracting, however it doesn't bother me (and I certainly wouldn't know how you could avoid that). Lovely, like it very much. regards, John.
The tones look perfect. I assume the sky was cloudy bright. Did you expose using a grey card? I know it is easy to underexpose snow. Was development normal or +?
Hi all, Thanks for the comments. I did manage to keep detail in the snow and branches. Unfortunately the clouds were breaking up from the overnight flurries, and the sky was getting brighter by the minute. I guess you use what you get. it didn't take long for a slight breeze to rid the branches of the snow. I used Pentax spotmeter on the snow and placed the snow at plus 1-2/3 stops, which got my low values as high as possible without blowing the highlights. It was then processed normal. The print looks very close to what shows on the screen, mine anyway.
Sorry about the snow EricR - it'll be here soon enough I think.
Cheers,
