What is a wet plate camera? Is it = to a camera adjusted to wet plate holders, or something else? Have a set of glass plate holders (5x7"), thought that perhaps they could be used (some days) for making wet plates. Wrong?

Good question. I am not very sure about their differences but these plates were made with a contemporary true wet plate camera.
I believe it has something to do with the back, making the plate lay a little further back away from the camera so the silver won't do much damage to the camera. Also there would be some sort of rail to catch the emulsion that drips off so you can easily whipe it off.
You can adjust normal backs to work with wet plates, and you can have special wet plate backs made for your camera. Or you can try and buy ya camera from the wet plate era or have a complete new one made for you; It's all possible ;-)
