I think you have some interesting patterns in these photos. My thought is that maybe you need to look for a little more texture in the white areas (which may be there, only not coming through on the scan), and print down the dark areas while still retaining some separation in the tones. The way I would approach this with this image is to split-filter print the image and do two things: dodge the dark areas during the soft exposure a little to enhance the local contrast, and burn in the highlights with a hard-filter-only burn to bring out any texture without muddying up the whites.
